Macoun played his minor hockey in the Newmarket Minor Hockey Association on various Rep. squads, winning both multiple Ontario 'AA' Championships and the prestigious International Silver Stick Tournament. He then entered the Junior ranks for three seasons with his home town Newmarket Flyers, (Central Junior B), including a short stint with their neighboring rivals, the Aurora Tigers. After nearly three years playing for the Ohio State Buckeyes, Macoun was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Calgary Flames on January 30, 1983. He was named to the 1984 NHL All-Rookie Team. In 1991 he was involved in a large trade that sent him to the Toronto Maple Leafs with Doug Gilmour. In 1998 he was traded to The Detroit Red Wings. Macoun played 1128 career NHL games, scoring 76 goals and 282 assists for 358 points, as well as compiling 1208 career penalty minutes. He was a Stanley Cup champion twice, with the Flames in 1989, and with the Red Wings in 1998.
