The undead Sentry arrived in New York and immediately attacked the Avengers who were on the scene, infecting them and turning them into horrific zombie-like creatures who hungered for living flesh. Unlike typical zombie types, the Marvel zombies are not reduced to shambling, mindless animals. They completely retain their intelligence and many of their powers, but they physically decay and their minds are twisted by the Hunger, compromising their powers of reason. They still retain all their memories but no longer regard friends and loved ones with the same familiarity they once did, seeing them only as meat to be devoured. The zombie plague manifests in the host as an insatiable hunger for living flesh, with the the host's body unable to die despite necrosis and loss of vital organ functions. However unlike other zombie infections in popular culture, infected hosts still retain their memories and intelligence despite the inability to control their hunger. History: When a Zombie Contagion infects the Earth of this reality, the newly zombified super-heroes eat the human population. When the Silver Surfer arrives to herald the coming of Galactus, the zombified meta-humans see an increasingly rare opportunity to feed, and after all others have failed to hurt the Surfer, Hulk steps in and bites his head off. Luke Cage, Wolverine, and Colonel America, begin to feed on the body until the other zombies present gather to feed as well. Unfortunately, before the rest can eat, Giant Man picks the decapitated Herald’s body and shares it between himself, Iron Man, and Spider-Man. When Beast complains to Colonel America that none of the others got a bite, the ex-president gestures at him, and inadvertently takes his face off with Power Cosmic that he has somehow obtained after eating the Silver Surfer. The seven Zombies decide that if other zombies taste bad when they are fresh, perhaps they taste better cooked. They proceed to attack and kill the other zombified meta-humans around them. Unfortunately, they still taste bad, leaving them are in the same position as before. When Galactus himself appears, they attack him with their Power Cosmic; however, they are not strong enough to defeat him, and so make a tactical withdrawal to come up with a plan. The plan consists of building a super-gun which combines all of their individual Power Cosmics into one extra powerful beam. Upon successfully constructing the weapon, the Zombies set off to find Galactus again. When they find him, they see that zombified versions of their enemies are making a determined, but futile, effort to bring down the Devourer themselves. It only takes a few shots from their new super-weapon to bring down Galactus, and as he lays there, the Super-Villains, and Super-Heroes fight over which group is to consume the body. The zombified heroes have an obvious upper hand with the Power Cosmic, and kill the greater numbers of the villains with relative ease, but not before Red Skull dips his hand into Colonel America’s partially removed cranium, and scoops his remaining brains out, killing him. It turns out that Galactus isn’t in fact dead; he was merely stunned, and begins to get up, but the remaining zombies fall on him and eat him alive. They absorb some of his powers through eating him, and presumably take his place as the Devourer of Worlds. The next time they are seen, they are descending from an alien sky, wearing customized versions of Galactus’ costume, after teleporting to another world to consume the inhabitants and, if they have taken the Galactus’ place, the world itself. Forty years after leaving Earth, the cosmic powered-zombies have systematically devoured all other life in the universe, as well as infecting the Titan Thanos (who is killed shortly thereafter by the Hulk after squabbling over food), the mutant Phoenix, Shi'ar warrior Gladiator and former Herald of Galactus Firelord with the zombie plague. They then decide to return to Earth and rebuild the interdimensional portal that Magneto destroyed forty years ago. En route to Earth, they feast on Ego the Living Planet to ease their hunger. On Earth, an elderly Black Panther rules the surviving humans in New Wakanda (in the ruins of New York), but is at war with the Acolytes, led by Fabian Cortez's son, Malcolm. The Panther's grandson accidentally discovers the severed head of Hawkeye, who has gone mad and amnesiac from decades of being alone and unable to move. One of Cortez's assassins attacks the Panther in his sleep and fatally wounds him, but the Panther is saved from death by the Wasp when she infects him, leaving him a zombie. After devouring the assassin, the two struggle with how to manage their hunger, while the cosmic zombies continue their approach to Earth. Cortez decides to have the Panther executed after he has Wasp and Hawkeye exterminated, but the execution is delayed by the arrival of the returning Cosmic Zombies. Giant Man wishes to start a "breeding program" to create more human food, but a battle then ensues in which Spider-Man and Luke Cage switch sides, knowing what they have done is wrong now that their hunger has subsided enough to allow them to think rationally. The Hulk reverts to Bruce Banner and is captured. After killing Gladiator, the human resistance drives off the remaining zombies and restore Luke Cage and Spider-Man's lost limbs with cybernetics. Spider-Man then reveals that the other zombies seek the dimensional teleporter, which Forge reveals he has stored in their base. Knowing that the zombies will not depart without the device, the heroes prepare for the next battle. It is then revealed that the Black Panther's deceased son, T'Channa, has been revived with a portion of Colonel America's brain inside of him. During the next battle, Iron Man breaches the compound and battles Forge, T'Chana and several Acolytes. Just as the cosmic zombies gain the upper hand and prepare to feast on the remaining humans, Giant Man is surprised to realize that he has lost his hunger. Giant Man then convinces the zombies that their hunger is in fact gone, and while he is successful, they are interrupted by an enraged and starving Hulk. The Hulk destroys several of the zombies (Phoenix, Firelord, Hawkeye and Iron Man) as they attempt to stop him from eating the remaining humans. Robert Reynolds, having fallen in love with Wasp and believing her to be dead, offers himself to be devoured by the Hulk to stop the Hulk's rampage. The Hulk consumes Reynolds and then reverts back to Banner, who requests to be killed by the survivors to prevent the Hulk from ever returning. New Wakanda is rebuilt, and Cortez then uses the teleporter to transport away the last of the zombies, intending to seize power for himself. The popular franchise stems from a 2005 arc of Ultimate Fantastic Four, "Crossover", which teased at a meeting between the Ultimate Universe and the mainstream one (something the publishers had said they'd never do but did years later with the Spider-Men event) through a meeting of the two different versions of the Fantastic Four, only for Ultimate Reed to discover that he'd been tricked by the zombie Reed Richards trying to find a portal to another dimension and, thus, a new food source for the zombies. The arc was popular, resulting in six mini-series and several guest appearances following the exploits of the zombies at time of writing (April 2010). The Marvel Zombies franchise following this Arc consists of: * Marvel Zombies: What happened after "Crossover". The Zombies hunt the last few non-infected people in the world (including Magneto and Black Panther) and try to figure out what to do once they've eaten everything -- when the Silver Surfer, Herald of Galactus, shows up looking for worlds that his master can consume... * Marvel Zombies: Dead Days: One-off prequel showing exactly what happened when the Zombie Sentry showed up, and how the Marvel Zombies world came to be. * Marvel Zombies vs. The Army Of Darkness: Intercontinuity Crossover with the Evil Dead series; at the same time as Dead Days, Ash Williams finds himself in the Marvel Zombies universe. Hilarity Ensues. * Marvel Zombies 2: Set forty years after Marvel Zombies: after gaining the powers of Galactus upon devouring him, the Marvel Zombies discover they appear to have eaten the entire universe, and decide to return to Earth to retry invading another dimension... unaware that a colony of survivors led by Black Panther has built a settlement in the ruins of New York... * Marvel Zombies 3: Set between Marvel Zombies and Marvel Zombies 2 -- the Marvel Zombies who didn't eat Galactus and have stayed on Earth have discovered the mainstream Marvel Universe... Also, it stars Aaron Stack AKA Machine Man, who retains most of his personality from Nextwave. * Marvel Zombies 4: After Marvel Zombies 3, the Midnight Sons have reformed to stop the spread of the virus and deal with the Zombies once and for all. * Marvel Zombies Return: Set after Marvel Zombies 2: The 'original' Marvel Zombies have been teleported out of their original universe into Earth-Z, an untouched universe reflecting different eras of Marvel Comics. Whilst Zombie Spider-Man tries to find a cure or solution for their condition, Zombie Giant Man decides to find new worlds to feed on... * Marvel Zombies: Evil Evolution: What happens when the Marvel Zombies meet the Marvel Apes. Machine Man and Howard the Duck tour the Marvel multiverse searching for various types of zombies to help Morbius's research into a cure. * Marvel Zombies Supreme: Jill Harper and her Guardsmen team are sent to investigate a distress call at an isolated Project: Pegasus facility. What they find out is that a renegade biologist has A) cloned the Squadron Supreme and B) accidentally turned the clones into zombies. Notable for not having any overt connections to the "Hunger Gospel" virus, for being the series that brought back the Jack of Hearts, and for the second issue, which is pretty much designed to irritate the hell out of Superman fans. * Marvel Zombies Destroy! (2012): In an alternate reality, the Nazis used a zombie plague to win World War II. When ARMOR discovers the Nazis have perfected a warship that can travel between parallel Earths, Howard the Duck and Dum-Dum Dugan assemble a team of Golden Age and World War II heroes to go to the zombie Nazis' Earth and take them out before they can mount an invasion. The zombies and the Hunger Gospel have appeared in multiple other books as well, as cameos or antagonists. Most notably, the 13-issue series Deadpool: Merc With A Mouth is the story of a time-traveling Deadpool meeting and killing several of the B-list zombies who survived the massacre in the original book. An arc in Reginald Hudlin's run on Black Panther also featured the Zombies. The term 'Marvel Zombies,' by the way, stems from an old nickname for devotees of Marvel Comics. Amusingly, one actually appears in MZ 5. After three days, Earth-2149's entire metahuman population had been infected and just about all the normal humans had been consumed. The zombified Reed Richards then began experimenting with dimensional travel as a means to spread the Hunger Gospel. His labours were successful and he opened a gateway to the Ultimate Marvel universe, and he and the rest of his Fantastic Four vanished into the portal. The portal device would later be destroyed by Magneto, who had survived the apocalypse up to that point. After denying the other zombies new meat, they took their aggression out on Magneto and ate him. The super-zombies would later be visited by their universe's version of the Silver Surfer, who heralded the coming of Galactus. The zombies did not know or care who he was, they just attacked and devoured him. Those zombies who consumed the Silver Surfer inadvertantly gained a portion of the Power Cosmic, suddenly able to conjure beams of energy and gain flight (if they did not have it before). When Galactus arrived, they used their new power to attack him and succeeded in bringing him down. A great battle took place between all of the zombified heroes and villains over who should get to eat Galactus. The Avengers who had consumed the Silver Surfer had the advantage and slaughtered most of the other zombies, and after consuming Galactus, gained an even greater degree of the Power Cosmic. The new Zombie Galacti left Earth and began travelling across the universe, attacking inhabited planets and devouring their entire populations. They would continue in this manner until they had completely consumed all life in the universe.
