The Ancient Enemy
rdfs:comment
The Ancient Enemy is the main antagonist in the Dean Koontz novel Phantoms, later adapted into the 1998 horror film of the same name. It is an amoeboid shape-shifting monster that lives underneath the fictional town of Snowfield, Colorado. Similar to Pennywise the Clown from Stephen King's IT, the Ancient Enemy can transform into nearly anything and makes its home in the sewers. The Ancient Enemy's cells are similar to fossil fuel, which enables the protagonists to defeat it via oil-eating bacteria.

"They care for nothing but their profits," Melisandre says darkly. "They give gold to any cause, without thought to whether it serves the enemy." Ask what Melisandre knows of the Iron Bank. Ask whether Melisandre is nervous Stannis won't get the loan. Stannis is in Braavos at the Iron Bank. Melisandre seems fretful with him gone. "We've heard nothing. This bank cannot dare refuse the king!" Warn Melisandre that Stannis needs those "bits of tin" to pay an army. Say the bank is neutral. It's a service, not part of the battle between dark and light. Assure Melisandre that R'hllor will bring Stannis the coin he needs. Melisandre looks at Alvyn with those unblinking eyes. "The Iron Bank controls bits of tin. Stannis is Azor Ahai reborn. They should not make him beg."

It is similar to a large amoeba and can send "phantoms" of itself to hunt prey, absorbing the knowledge and memories of the people and animals that are consumed. It believes itself to be Satan and is speculated to have caused the extinction of the dinosaurs and mass vanishings throughout history. The Ancient Enemy's cells are similar to fossil fuel, which enables the protagonists to defeat it via oil-eating bacteria.
