Tyranids
rdfs:comment
They are a nomadic alien race comprising many genetically engineered forms created from harvested bio-mass. They are known as the "Great Devourer" and also the "Shadow In The Warp" (after the effect of their hive mind on FTL travel and communications) and pose a severe threat to the Imperium. They seek to consume all in their path, draining all planets of every resource and converting all living and some non-living material into Tyranid biomass. The mentality of the Tyranid approach to warfare can be described with the phrase "quantity has a quality all its own". From the "lowly" Ripper, to the deadly Hive Tyrant and beyond, the signature of the Tyranid species is that they overwhelm their foes with sheer numbers, reproducing massive numbers of highly virulent organisms in record time from the biochemical soup that they derive from the biospheres of the worlds that they consume. The components of a Tyranid Hive Fleet travel almost exclusively in large groups known as swarms that possess specialized biomechanical creatures for destroying and consuming a wide variety of prey life forms. Tyranids have evolved sophisticated methods for facilitating genetic transfer across species boundaries. As a result, a significant goal of any Tyra Tyranids are a parasitic and powerful alien menace from the popular table-top game, Warhammer 40,000, as well as its related universe - which has been expanded into books, videogames and more over the years - of all the countless enemies of the Imperium it is said the Tyranids are the most alien as they can't be intimidated nor reasoned with and don't want things like money or power: instead they seek only continual expansion of their own species. Without warning the Tyranid alien threat entered the galaxy of the Imperium, destroying all in its path, consuming entire planets, leaving them lifeless in their wake.Neither beast nor man, the Tyranid forces attack without warning, descending in huge swarms onto a planet's surface, consuming all biological matter that can be found, adding new genetic advances to their own race. The Tyranid could very well be the greatest threat that the Imperium has ever faced. The Tyranids are super-predators destined to hunt all others to extinction. Each Tyranid is a living weapon, perfectly bioengineered to rend and kill. As their hive fleets drift through space, they strip all life from the worlds in their path.

n22:abstract
As a result, a significant goal of any Tyranid invasion is acquisition of useful new biological traits from other lifeforms. These are used by the Hive Mind to enhance the Tyranids' effectiveness in consuming new worlds to gain more of the necessary organic raw materials for further reproduction. All Tyranids are reproduced by a single, highly intelligent female bioform known as a Norn-Queen. A Hive Fleet's Norn-Queens are the most important Tyranids within the fleet, for if they are injured or killed the Tyranids cannot reproduce their numbers from the captured bio-mass. As a result, Norn-Queens can be found only at the heart of the largest and most-well defended Tyranid Hive Ships. The Tyranids were initially described in the 1st Edition of Warhammer 40,000 (Rogue Trader), with their basic form not too different from that used today. Their only additional troop type was an enslaved alien race, the Zoat. At that time they were not an important race in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. In later editions they became a playable faction in their own right, and it was revealed that the Genestealers (first popularized in Space Hulk) were in fact part of the advance reconnaissance element of the main Tyranid Hive Fleets. Tyranids are a parasitic and powerful alien menace from the popular table-top game, Warhammer 40,000, as well as its related universe - which has been expanded into books, videogames and more over the years - of all the countless enemies of the Imperium it is said the Tyranids are the most alien as they can't be intimidated nor reasoned with and don't want things like money or power: instead they seek only continual expansion of their own species. Tyranids are an alien race from the cold depths of space travelling the galaxies and the voids between them in vast, drifting hive fleets, constantly hungry for warm flesh. They infest the stars in their billions, a raw force of destruction that has been likened to a locust swarm - remorselessly hungry and far too numerous to stop. When a hive fleet locates a planet its warrior-organisms descend and slaughter its inhabitants like cattle, dissolving their corpses into biological gruel from which new Tyranids are spawned. The Tyranid race thinks, perceives and acts as one great whole; every Tyranid is bound to the implacable will of the Hive Mind.
