The type of machine can combine with any of the different ways of experiencing the process of time travel and with the various degress to which the past can be changed. \n* With the Back to The Future-type machine, one simply gets into a vehicle of some sort, and the vehicle is transported to a certain time. When a traveler wants to go back, they use the machine again. This is pretty much the most common type, possibly having to do with the fact that one of the earliest time travel stories (The Time Machine) used this type. \n* A TARDIS-type machine works like a Back to The Future-type one except not only can you program it to go anywhere in time, but also anywhere in space. Basically it's a vehicle that can go anywhere in 4 dimensions. \n* Terminator-type machines usually involve some sort of big device that projects a traveller back, but does not come with them. Once back in time, the person has no way back to the future besides The Slow Path, unless they can somehow build another device, or if they were able to bring an entire additional time machine with them to leave behind on that trip also. (And this is sometimes precluded by time machines being too big, or the rules not allowing you to take things, or just time machines, with you.) Sometimes these only allow backwards trips to start with. \n* Time Cop-type machines are a cross between the Back to The Future-type and the Terminator-type; the traveller is sent back by a machine that does not come with him, but has some sort of way (such as a remote or prearranged time portal) to make a trip back, utilizing the future time machine. Can also being used as a \"time scoop\" to bring things from the past into the present without going there. Losing the signaler or missing the prearranged portal can require past travelers Writing Back To The Future to get home. \n* A Time Portal provides a direct gateway between two points in space and time is another variation. These can be random, appear and disappear in a predictable way, or be permanent. A pre-existing Time Portal is a way to introduce Time Travel to a series without opening the Pandora's Box of \"why didn't they just go back in time and stop the bad guy\". \n* A Time Dilation Field is a device that causes time inside a certain area to either go faster or slower. While not a time machine in the classical sense, a field with time set to go slower is a good way to travel forward in time. \n* In Real Life, Time Dilation is an actual effect that occurs when bodies are moving at different relative velocities, or at different depths in a gravity well. This is generally too tame and prosaic for all but the hardest Science Fiction, though. Other types exist, but these are the most common. Compare Interdimensional Travel Device. A downcast Betty and Noah, both having eluded capture, returned to Betty's birthday party, where a hand-me-down \"re-gift\" from Penelope inspired her to repair one of X-5's prototype time machine (its only flaw being that it turned its occupants into gelatin) to full working order and travel to the future. He uses it to travel back to the day of the Science fair to sabotage Lewis's Memory Scanner, making him abandon it so they could steal it. Unfortunately, they lacked knowledge of how to operate it during their presentation at Inventco, so they decide to find Lewis to learn how and upon learning that Wilbur took him to the future, they used their Time Machine to follow them. In the future, Lewis crashes Time Machine 1 after fighting with Wilbur when he realized he can go back and stop his biological mother from abandoning him as an infant. The two managed to push the wreckage back to the Robinson household to repair it, without success. Meanwhile, while Doris infiltrated the Robinson household, Goob took Time Machine 2 back to the dinosaur era to bring back Tiny the T-Rex to capture Lewis. When that failed and Lewis learned that Wilbur never intended to bring him back to see his mother, Goob and Doris pick him up with another false promise to get him to fix the Memory Scanner. Though Lewis escapes, Goob and Doris use Time Machine 2 to go back to the past for a second chance at impressing Inventco. As the future changed around Lewis, he found his Memory Scanner, which displayed a video of Goob successfully impressing Inventco and thus began the mass production of helping hats, which Doris uses to enslave humanity, to Goob's horror, before Doris sics a number of hats against him. As soon as the recording stops, he is attacked by Doris and the hat-controlled Robinsons. Taking cover inside Time Machine 1, Lewis managed to repair it. He manages to flee Doris' lair, which then sprouts legs and starts pursuing him through the industrial, polluted future where humanity are enslaved to robotic hats. Eventually cornered by the giant hat and swarms of hats, Lewis then realize that since he invented Doris, he can un-invent her. Using the time machine, he returns to the past, to the point where Goob signs his contract with Inventco and reveals Doris' planned betrayal. Doris then attempts to attack her creator, but Lewis simply swears never to invent her, causing Doris to vanish into non-existence. He then brings Goob back to the future to show him Doris' future, which soon changes back into the peaceful, idyllic future. After Lewis reconnects with his future family and meets his future self, Cornelius Robinson, he rejoins Wilbur to return to his past. "\"Maybe it's some kind of transport pod!\" \"I don't see a door or license plate anywhere.\" --Calvin and Hobbes in Mesozoic Era, talking about a dinosaur egg The time machine first appeared in the strip for August 31, 1987, when Calvin and Hobbes originally intended to go to the Future. It accidentally ended up in the Mesozoic, or more specifically, the Jurassic, but they did not realize it. They found a huge dinosaur egg, which they assumed was a space pod. They realised their error when they were chased to their Time Machine by an Apatosaurus. The error occurred because they were facing the wrong way. Later, Calvin and Hobbes went back in time again, this time to take pictures of the dinosaurs there and sell them later. This time around, Calvin had fixed the machine so the direction in which they time-travel was no longer determined by the way they faced. Their adventure was a success, gaining pictures of Diplodocus and Stegosaurus, until they were chased back to the time machine by a hungry Allosaurus. They only just escaped and then had the pictures copied out, only to have said pictures discredited (by Dad) to be frauds. The time machine was used a third time when Calvin and Hobbes went forward in time from 6:30 to 8:30 to get a report (a one page story) from then. Upon arriving, it was discovered that the 8:30 Calvin hadn't done the report ether. So the 6 and 8:30 Calvins went to 7:30 to make that Calvin do the report. After a brief argument, (over how they couldn't gang up on the 7:30 Calvin because they were all the same Calvin) the 6:30 and 8:30 Calvins went back to 8:30, where they discovered the 6:30 and 8:30 Hobbes had done the report while the Calvins were gone. So the 6:30 Calvin and Hobbes went back to 6:30. It was discovered the next day that the story was a mockery of the last day's events (that got an A+ and a good note on the \"tiger narration\")."@en . . "The time machine is an object in The Sims 3: Ambitions. It is created with the Inventing skill. It will be about the fifteenth invention of your Sim and it requires inventing level 9. After inventing the time machine, it will be found in the family inventory instead of the personal inventory. The exterior look of the time machine is most likely based on the one seen in Blackadder: Back and Forth. A Sim can return with various items including a caveman gnome, much as the original Mysterious Mr. Gnome is discovered in the Mausoleum. It's possible for Sims to meet their previous selves and/or previous companions, and tell them to stop fighting and focus on love and family. If this happens, a Sim may suddenly have a child, but the child will only have one parent. When a Sim travels to the past, he or she can accidentally knock over a job board. If that happens, when the Sim returns, one of his or her housemates will have switched careers. Occasionally, traveling to the past will result in a message about the Sim using the machine having saved a child in front of his or her past self. This results in a new child being added to the household. The time machine also makes a quick reference to Mass Effect when it says that the Sim was passing a crowd, listening about a shepherd (Commander Shepard, the main protagonist), saving the Galaxy from an ancient god threat (the Reapers). Additionally, the futuristic outfits that can be gained by going into the future highly resemble the Spectre Armors that can be acquired in Mass Effect. It also makes a reference to Red Faction: Guerilla when it says -Sim- helped stand up for miner's rights on Mars. -Sim- was almost arrested by Earth Police, but found a convenient escape through the timestream before being interrogated. The time machine also makes a reference to Dragon Age, when it says, \"(Sim's name) got lost in some tunnels, but a warden (The Warden, the main protagonist) escorted them out.\""@en . . . . . . . .
