Mitsuhide Akechi is one of Nobunaga's trusted vassals who is best known for betraying his lord at Honnōji. His real personality and the reasons behind his betrayal are ambiguous and controversial. The truth is still being debated amongst historians to this day. His famous daughter is Gracia. Samurai Warriors fans voted him to reach thirteenth place in Gamecity's Sengoku Musou 3: Empires character popularity poll. For the Samurai Warriors 4 poll, he is nineteenth place. In the first character popularity poll for Sengoku Musou Shoot, he was voted to eleventh place with players.

Mitsuhide is an Oda vassal who would eventually betray Nobunaga. Contrary to the usual portrayal of Mitsuhide (especially in Onimusha and Koei's Samurai Warriors), here he is depicted as a sinister and sadistic psychopath who enjoys the suffering of other people; possibly of a greater evil than Nobunaga himself. He is depicted as one of two characters who can hurt his allies, though they don't lose life. Wields two scythes. His element is darkness. Although he was playable in the Japanese version of Devil Kings, the US version relegated him to NPC status.

Born in Mino province—now Gifu prefecture—as a descendant of the shugo Toki clan, Mitsuhide began serving Nobunaga after the latter's conquest of Mino province in 1566 and received Sakamoto (in Omi, 100,000 koku) in 1571. Although Nobunaga rarely put too much trust in his retainers, he particularly trusted Katsuie Shibata, Hashiba Hideyoshi, and Akechi Mitsuhide. After Mitsuhide received Sakamoto he moved to pacify the Tamba region by defeating several clans such as the Isshiki of Tango.

While he initially appears to be a mentor of sorts to Gai Nagareboshi, helping him deal with keeping the secret of his time-travel from his companions, supplying him with historical recounts of the Soul Society's creation; the time of the Mototsu in particular and explaining the basics of time-travel, it is revealed that he is actually wiping Gai's mind of the information concerning Yuu's death every time he reaches the scene; thus explaining why each time Gai attempts to remember the event, it is always inconsistent; which concerns Mitsuru Inazuma.
