Spiny Shell
rdfs:comment
The Spiny Shell is a racer's worst fear, as it always flies towards the leader. When it reaches it's target, it hovers for a moment, then smashes into the ground, causing an explosion that affects all racers within range. It is a blue shell with spikes on the back of it and has wings in some games. They are also known as blue shells. The Spiny Shell, also known by many names (such as the Blue Shell, the Blue Terror, the Blue Menace, the Leader Killer and the First Place Stalker)is an item that has appeared in every Mario Kart game except for Super Mario Kart, though it has taken different forms between games. The shell has a distinctive dark blue surface with spikes on top. Depending on the game, the shell may or may not have white wings. It is hated by many people, and can prove the deciding factor for who wins and loses a race, as many an unfortunate victim have learned the hard way. Because of how much hate this item recieves, many people consider this item to be the WORST Mario Kart Item. The Spiny Shell was announced to appear in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U during the Super Smash Bros. Direct, and it functions like it does in the Mario Kart series. It seeks out a player and hovers over them, then crashes on top of them, doing a decent amount of damage. The Spiny Shell, also known as Spiked Shell, Blue Shell or Blue Spiny Shell, is a throwing/flying item that appears in Super Smash Flash 2. It is one of four items that conforms the shell family, which also includes the Green Shell, the Red Shell and the Yellow Shell; it is the rarest of all four. It is based on the Spiny Shell from the Mario Kart series and has similar properties. It homes in on the leading player. When it hits a character, it will cause an explosion that damages all but the player that threw it. The Spiny Shell, also known as the Blue Shell by various media, is an item from the Mario Kart series and a power-up in New Super Mario Bros. Its effect and appearance differ from game to game. In the Mario Kart series, the shell has wings, and in most games spikes. The blue shell can be shot from second place to twelfth place, regardless of what is in the way, it will home in on the character in first place and cause an explosion. The explosion will affect other players that are near.

n6:abstract
While devastating, the Spiny Shell is not entirely unavoidable, as it can usually be avoided by using a Mushroom with proper timing, among other speed-altering maneuvers. The Super Horn, introduced in Mario Kart 8, can also be used to block the Spiny Shell from connecting. The only ways to avoid being hit by a Blue Koopa Shell is using a Mushroom right as the blue shell begins to slam into the kart, letting the person in second momentarily take first just before it completely homes in, and entering launching parts of a course, such as the barrel from DK Mountain. You can also avoid the shell by getting a Star. In Mario Kart 7 and later games, the Spiny Shell does not have wings. In New Super Mario Bros. the shell is used to roll around like a normal green or red shell from a Koopa Troopa or Paratroopa when the shell is kicked. This makes it easier for Mario to get rid of enemies.
