Over time the Jewish population of Kaifeng assimilated and intermarried, despite this, some people can still trace their decent from the Kaifeng Jews, some of these people have recently returned to Judaism. Sa'id ibn Hawqal was a merchant from Damascus who journeyed to Kaifeng on a trading expedition. There he was cheated by the city's governor Bagagan which led to an exchange of curses.
