Compost is used in gardening and agriculture, mixed in with the soil. It improves soil structure, increases the amount of organic matter, and provides nutrients. Biodegradation is the means by which organic matter is recycled in its environment. Compost is a common name for humus, which is the result of the decomposition of organic matter. Decomposition is performed primarily by microbes, although larger creatures such as earthworms and ants contribute to the process. Decomposition occurs naturally in all but the most hostile environments, such as buried in landfills or in extremely arid deserts, which prevent the microbes and other decomposers from thriving. Composting is the controlled decomposition of organic matter. Rather than allowing nature to take its slow course, a composter provides an optimal environment in which decomposers can thrive. To encourage the most active microbes, the compost pile needs the proper mix of the following ingredients:
* Carbon
* Nitrogen
* Oxygen (air)
* Water Decomposition happens even in the absence of some of these ingredients, but not nearly as quickly and not nearly as pleasantly (for example, the plastic bag of vegetables in your refrigerator is decomposed by microbes, but the absence of air encourages the growth of anaerobic microbes that produce disagreeable odors)."@en . Lo estudió el químico alemán Justus von Liebig. Además de su utilidad directa, el compost implica una solución estratégica y ambientalmente aceptable a la problemática planteada por las grandes concentraciones urbanas (y sus residuos sólidos orgánicos domésticos)y las explotaciones agrícolas, forestales y ganaderas, cuyos residuos orgánicos deben ser tratados. El compostaje es una tecnología alternativa a otras que no siempre son respetuosas con los recursos naturales y el medio ambiente y que además tienen un costo elevado. El compost es un producto concentrado que debe ser mezclado con el suelo u otros ingredientes antes de su uso. El porcentaje máximo de compost en la mezcla está alrededor del 30% y varía en función de su uso posterior. En paisajismo y jardinería, por ejemplo, puede ser usado de forma directa como cobertura para el suelo. En cualquier caso, al igual que el propio suelo, no debe apilarse sobre los troncos de árboles y arbustos ya que esta práctica provoca el aumento de los daños causados por insectos. El compost mejora la estructura del suelo, incrementa la cantidad de materia orgánica y proporciona nutrientes, mayormente macronutrientes como el Nitrógeno, Potasio y Fósforo. Biodegradación es el conjunto de procesos bioquímicos mediante los que la materia orgánica es reciclada por el medio, siendo transformada en especies inorgánicas. En realidad, compost es el nombre común del humus; éste proviene de la descomposición de materias orgánicas. Esta descomposición es llevada a cabo principalmente por microorganismos, aunque algunos animales como lombrices y hormigas contribuyen al proceso. La descomposición ocurre de forma natural en la mayoría de los ambientes excepto aquellos más hostiles como desiertos muy áridos, etc. que impiden que los microbios y otros agentes de descomposición se desarrollen. El compostaje es el proceso de descomposición controlada de la materia orgánica. En lugar de permitir que el proceso suceda de forma lenta en la propia naturaleza, puede prepararse un entorno optimizando las condiciones para que los agentes de la descomposición proliferen. Estas condiciones incluyen una mezcla correcta de carbono, nitrógeno, y oxígeno, así como control de la temperatura, pH o humedad. Si alguno de estos elementos estuviese en exceso o en defecto el proceso se produciría igualmente, pero quizás de forma más lenta e incluso desagradable por la actuación de microorganismos anaerobios que producen olores."@es . . .
