Unalaq merged with Vaatu to become a Dark Avatar and separated Raava from Korra, destroying her memories of her past lives in the process. Korra was able to defeat him and reunited with Raava, although her previous incarnations were still lost. Later on, she and Team Avatar went on a journey to find new airbenders after they gained airbending following Harmonic Convergence, but was targeted by the Red Lotus. Following her near-death battle with Zaheer, Korra was debilitated and was confined to a wheelchair, entering a state of depression. After spending time recovering, she decided to travel the world for six months. During which she met up Toph Beifong, who helped rid the remaining metal poison in her body. However, due to the efforts of Tonraq, Chief Sokka, Fire Lord Zuko, and Councilman Tenzin, the attempt was thwarted and the criminals were apprehended, although Unalaq's involvement remained unknown. After the incident, Tonraq and Tenzin decided to seclude the Avatar in the Southern Water Tribe compound, away from the public eye as she pursued the bending arts.
