Defence Against the Dark Arts
rdfs:comment
E.g. Defence Against the Dark Arts (sometimes written as DADA) is a subject taught at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry[1]. In this class students learn how to magically defend themselves against Dark Creatures, the Dark Arts, and other dark charms. Offensive magic is also taught in this class, such as how to duel, which requires the use of both offensive and defensive magic. It has a notorious reputation of burning through teachers like a brushfire through California. It was cursed by Lord Voldemort when he attempted to apply for a position teaching the subject, and since then no teacher has lasted more than a year. Teachers who have taught this subject include Quirrell, Gilderoy Lockhart, Remus Lupin, Barty Crouch Jr, Dolores Umbridge, Severus Snape and Amycus Carrow. "All first-years at Hogwarts must take seven subjects: Transfiguration, Charms, Potions, History of Magic, Defence Against the Dark Arts, Astronomy and Herbology. Flying lessons (on broomsticks) are also compulsory. At the end of their second year at Hogwarts, students are required to choose a minimum of two more subjects from the following list: Arithmancy, Muggle Studies, Divination, Study of Ancient Runes and Care of Magical Creatures. Very specialised subjects such as Alchemy are sometimes offered in the final two years, if there is sufficient demand." Beginning it's teaching in first year, it is considered a core subject for all students to learn until a minimum of year five with the OWL level examinations. The study of defensive and offensive techniques and the theoretical information behind the dark arts currently within the modern wizarding world has been a popular subject to study. Required for several Ministry jobs in particular the Magical Law Enforcement. Students will learn both the practical defensive moves, and the ways in which they can be used for other purposes. The position of Defence Against the Dark Arts professor here was once rumoured to be jinxed, as no teacher could hold the post for more than a year. Tom Marvolo Riddle (Lord Voldemort) jinxed the position because Dumbledore did not give him the job when he applied for it. The subject is also a class at Ilvermorny. It began teaching the subject in the 17th century. Defence Against the Dark Arts is a class offered at Hogwarts that, understandably, teaches the students how to defend themselves against dark magic. It has a notorious reputation of burning through teachers like a brushfire through California. There seem to be two types of lessons that are taught in DADA: offensive/defensive spells, and protection from dangerous magical creatures, though dangerous creatures as a primary foe was mostly emphasized in the early books. This may have been because with the threat of Voldemort and dark arts all but snuffed, nasty creatures were seen as a remaining threat. In crossover fanfic, especially crossover fic that replaces one of the books by bringing in an outside character as a teacher, expect that character to teach DADA. Though sometimes they have taken over History of Magic if they're feeling frisky. Due to the fact that the main character of the books is shown as having a natural talent for DADA, many Sues will be shown as also excelling in the subject or possibly even teaching it. Beginning it's teaching in first year, it is considered a core subject for all students to learn until a minimum of year five with the OWL level examinations.
