At a young age, Barak Quall showed a natural aptitude for starship technology, rebuilding his first hyperdrive at the age of 11. When Emperor Palpatine's "New Order" began to show its xenophobic roots, his family left for the Sluissi system. It was while working at the Sluis Van shipyards that Barak met and befriended the Corellian smuggler Jacen Wayland, leaving his job as a freelance tech to pursue the excitement and lousy pay of a smuggler. His skills became invaluable in the maintenance and modification of Wayland's ship, the MidKnight Son, a YT-1930 that he and Quall worked on until it was nearly unrecognizable as the ship it had once been. n4:abstract
Among the Mon Cal's proudest achievements was the improvement of a variable ID transponder, allowing the MidKnight Son to reliably pass itself off as another YT-1930 when necessary, as well as installing a sensor-shielded passenger area, allowing them to smuggle Rebel operatives and other VIPs past Imperial customs agents. Barak Quall normally carried a Merr-Sonn 434 blaster pistol. Later, while Wayland was running a privateer fleet in the service of the New Republic, Quall was given command of Drake, and had by then also bought his own ship, a small, Curich-class shuttle named Naiad.
