His pursuit of power and arcane mastery led him to commit a number of horrific acts against his own people and the races of Azeroth, including defecting to Sargeras during the War of the Ancients and creating the second Well of Eternity. For his actions, he was imprisoned for ten thousand years, until his release during the Third War. He came to be called the Betrayer for his acts against the night elf people and carried the title of Lord of Outland. Seeking to bring down her erstwhile prisoner, Maiev allied with Akama to invade the Black Temple, where she cornered Illidan in his inner sanctum and struck him down, bringing an end to one of the most tragic stories in Azeroth's history. Illidan made his debut in World of Warcraft as the final boss of Black Temple in patch 2.1. Tyrande, když si vzpoměla, že je tu vězněný Illidan ho osvobodila, protože to stále byl její kamarád, a hlavně by jim mohl pomoci v boji s Legií. Ihned po osvobození se vydal do Fellwoodu, kde bojoval proti Legii. Potkal se tam z Arthasem, šampionem Krále Lichů, který mu pověděl o Gul'Danově lebce a o tom, že kdo si jí vezme, získá ohromnou moc. Lebku však ztrážilo mnoho démonů. Illidan po ukrutném boji, při kterém zemřelo mnoho jeho válěčníků. Nakonec však bitvu vyhrál a pohltil Lebku. Tím se z něj stal polodémon, vládnoucí mnohem větší silou než původně. S těmito schopnostmi se vrátil za Malfurionem, ale ten ho vykázal z lesa, jelikož tímto činem prý stratil všechno elfství a čest. Poté byla Legie poražena. Oni okamžitě vyrazili k ostrovům, ale Illidan uprchl na východ do Lordaeronu, který byl nedávno zničen Pohromou. Co nejrychleji se dostal do kouzelnického města Dalaranu, kde začal Oko používát k rozbití Ledové Koruny. Byl však zajmut Malfurionem a Maiev a kouzlo selhalo. Kil'Jaeden mu však dal ještě jednu šanci aby Ledový Trůn zničil. Vydal se tedy se svými spojenci do Northrendu. Museli bojovat proti Anub'Arakovi a jeho Nerubianům, ale pomalu se probojovali až k Ledovému Trůnu. Tam bojoval Illidan s Arthasem, ale nakonec byl poražen a padl téměř jako mrtvý do sněhu a skoro v bezvědomí sledoval, jak se Arthas stává králem Lichů. Keal'Thas s Vashj neměli šanci trůn zničit a proto se i s oslabeným Illidanem vrátili do Outlandu. V Outlandu ještě Illidan vedl několik bitev pro upevnění své pozice Vládce.
