The Keldar were a species of the galaxy. They settled on the Outer Rim Territories planet of Nag Ubdur after being transplanted along with Artiodac refugees and the Ubdurian natives. Keldar was a Ferengi, the husband of Ishka and the father of Quark and Rom. According to Ishka, he wasn't a very successful businessman, but he knew "everything" about family. His son, Rom, confirmed his lack of financial acumen, noting that he went from one bad deal to the next. However, Keldar was still a very traditional Ferengi, and refused to take business advice from his wife, despite the fact that she was actually far more adept at financial matters than he was. He once said to Quark, "I don't know what I'm going to do about that female...", referring to Ishka's headstrong tendencies. (DS9: "The House of Quark", "Family Business") For Rom's Naming Day, Keldar bought the presents. On the day, Quark substituted the presents with old vegetables and sold them for far more than their father had paid for them. (DS9: "Rivals") Keldar advised Quark not to leave Ferenginar, saying he had enough business opportunities at home, but Quark preferred to listen to the seventy-fifth Rule of Acquisition ("Home is where the heart is, but the stars are made of latinum.") and left Ferenginar. (DS9: "Civil Defense") In 2371, when Rom told Quark that money wasn't everything, Quark chastised him, saying, "If father were alive, he'd wash your mouth out with galcor." (DS9: "The House of Quark") Keldar died some time before 2371. (DS9: "Family Business") To insure Jadzia Dax would enter the Klingon afterlife in Sto-vo-kor, Quark joined Miles O'Brien, Doctor Julian Bashir and Worf under the command of General Martok in a raid on the Monac shipyards. When boarding the ship, Quark declared himself in traditional Klingon custom as Quark, son of Keldar. (DS9: "Shadows and Symbols") This character was only mentioned in dialogue. Keldar was a Ferengi male, the husband of Ishka and father to Quark and Rom. While he was never very successful at making profit or understanding the Ferengi Rules of Acquisition, he was known for being a great husband and father. (DS9 episode: "Family Business") Keldar once comforted Rom when his son was in debt to an older child. Keldar tried to reason with the father of the boy, although he was unsuccessful. (DS9 novel: The 34th Rule) When Keldar died, Quark and Rom were both relatively young. When Quark opened his legacy chest he found dozens of headskirts. Quark discovered the headskirts dated back many years and were worn by survivors of floods, financial collapses, earthquakes and other disasters to have taken place on Ferenginar. Quark realised that his father was teaching him an important lesson - despite tragedy, Ferengi can always make profit. (DS9 novel: Legends of the Ferengi) Whenever Quark had dealings with Klingons, he would follow their tradition and introduce himself as "Quark, son of Keldar". (DS9 episodes: "The House of Quark", "Looking for par'Mach in All the Wrong Places", "Shadows and Symbols", DS9 short story: "... Loved I Not Honor More") In 2371, Quark told Rom that Keldar would be proud to know Rom had embezzled money from Grand Nagus Zek. (DS9 episode: "Prophet Motive") Keldar was a Ferengi who was the husband of Ishka and the father of Quark and Rom. He was also an extremely traditional Ferengi, this was shown by a complete refusal to take advice from his wife (who turned out to be very good at business). He died at some point before the year 2371.
