In 174 AG, the guard post officer was on duty when he spotted Varrick and Bolin as they were escorting several other waterbending and firebending prisoners to a secure facility. He asked the two officers from where did the prisoners escape, to which Bolin answered that they escaped from "camp fourteen". He did not believe Bolin's story as camp fourteen was located in the opposite direction of where they were. At that time, Varrick became annoyed and ranted at the officer on duty, telling him what he had to go through to recapture the prisoners. After Varrick threatened to report him to Kuvira, the officer ordered that the gate be opened and let the convoy through. He was later seen fighting against Bolin and the escapees, but was forced to retreat when Bolin used his lavabending.
