rdfs:comment
One of the first new starfighters commissioned by the Empire after the Battle of Endor, the Scimitar Assault Bomber was developed by Captain Tomax Bren of the infamous Scimitar Assault Wing, hence the fighter's name. It has maneuverability somewhere between that of a TIE Interceptor and an X-Wing, more armament than a TIE Bomber, and the ability to fly well in an atmosphere. Although intended mainly for ground assaults, the Scimitar can be easily outfitted for space-based missions. The Scimitar assault bomber had a single elongated body, and the pilot and gunner sat in a forward, shaped module which could eject from the craft and serve as an escape pod. The fuselage was supported by two large elongated array wings on either side. Interlocked repulsorlift thrusters provided it with additional maneuverability. In space, the Scimitar assault bomber was faster than any TIE Bomber, and, in planetary atmospheres, it could travel at 1,150 km per hour, with its dive-bombing speed an additional 100 km per hour faster. Pushed from the drafting board to the production line by Grand Admiral Thrawn himself, the Scimitar bomber embodies the latest step in bomber design. Most significantly, the craft places a crew of two inside an ejectable command cabin. Two crewmembers already replace an enormous amount of strain that a single pilot faced in the standard TIE Bomber, and survivability is greatly enhanced. However, unlike its hard-hitting predecessor, the Scimitar doesn't support torpedoes or similar large-scale ordinance. Instead, the payload usually consists of concussion missiles, gravity grenades, mines, and thermal detonators. In this regard, the Scimitar is much better suited to groud bombardment and suppression.

n38:abstract
One of the first new starfighters commissioned by the Empire after the Battle of Endor, the Scimitar Assault Bomber was developed by Captain Tomax Bren of the infamous Scimitar Assault Wing, hence the fighter's name. It has maneuverability somewhere between that of a TIE Interceptor and an X-Wing, more armament than a TIE Bomber, and the ability to fly well in an atmosphere. It has a long, central tube for a hull, and was the first TIE-like craft to be a two-man ship. The pilot and bomber sit in the forward section of the hull, which can be jettisoned in emergencies. This forward section is situated in front of the wings, providing enhanced visibility over most TIE designs. The middle section of the hull contains the power generators, sensors, and targeting computers. The rear section contains the bomb bays and engine. It is armed with two laser cannons and two racks of eight weapons bays that are usually armed with concussion missiles. Proton grenades and free-falling thermal detonators can also be carried for deployment via the bomb bays. The Scimitar is protected by additional hull plating and the introduction of shields. The Scimitar bomber has been rated at speeds of 1,150 kilometers per hour in atmospheric conditions. By introducing thrust from the repulsorlift engines, speeds of 1,250 kilometers per hour can be sustained during bombing runs. The Scimitar is different from the TIE Bomber in that it has only a single ion engine - paired with two interlocked repuslorlift engines - to propel it. This single engine is the reason why the ubiquitous “TIE” designation was not given to the Scimitar despite its similarities to other TIE series designs. Despite this, it is still considered part of the TIE series because it shares many of the same features as other TIE models. Although intended mainly for ground assaults, the Scimitar can be easily outfitted for space-based missions. Indeed, the performance ratings are much along the lines of the TIE Bomber, with understandable improvements. Of greatest note is the atmospheric speed, which has been drastically improved with the incorporation of two high-output repulsorlift engines. These not only increase cruise speed, but also aid in the Scimitar's unbelieveable divebombing speeds, sometimes in excess of 1250 kph. This means that very few combat airspeeders can catch it during combat, and once it is in a dive, there is very little that can stop the bomber from destroying its target. While it does have shielding, the Scimitar still suffers from the Imperial trend of not outfitting its fighter craft with hyperdrives. In this, it must be launched and recovered by parent capital ships. Also, the TIE prefix is a misnomer of sorts. While it is of the same TIE line, developed by the traditional Sienar corporation, it only has a single Ion Engine, which is nearly triple the size of a normal TIE engine, but is just as efficient and powerful. The name Scimitar is the result of its prototype trials and use at the hands of the Scimitar Bomber Wing, the most decorated bomber unit in the Imperial Navy. Craft ........ It was 13.8 meters long, and thus longer than the standard TIE/LN starfighter. Its weapons included two laser cannons, concussion missile launchers, and chutes for thermal detonators and proton grenades. However, instead of two ion engines, it only had one, thus the lack of the prefix TIE. It was designed to bomb planets into submission.
