Au\u00DFerdem wurde bald darauf auch die Neuerrichtung des Elefantenhauses nach Abschluss eines Vertrages mit dem Architekten Lord Foster bekanntgegeben. In Kopenhagen lebten bei Punjabs Geburt auch seine Halbschwester Coco und sein Bruder Santosh, der im April 2003 an den polnischen Zoo P\u0142ock abgegeben wurde, wo er mit dem Jungbullen Thisiam zusammenkam und 2006 starb. Punjab wuchs in dieser Gruppe auf, die mit Inda au\u00DFerdem eine Leitkuh hatte. Er wurde als verspielt beschrieben und war sehr aktiv auf der Elefantenanlage, wo er auch mit den erwachsenen Elefanten spielte. Seinen Namen erhielt er nach dem Eingang etlicher Vorschl\u00E4ge und wies mit der Bezeichnung eines indischen Bundesstaates auf seine teilweise indische Herkunft hin. Nachdem seine \u00E4ltere Halbschwester Coco am 21.09.2003 nach einer bakteriellen Infektion gestorben war, zeigte Punjab am 04.10.2003 erste Zeichen von Lethargie. Er verhielt sich ruhiger, wies aber kein Fieber auf. Am Folgetag schien es ihm besser zu gehen, der Tierarzt verabreichte ihm zur Prophylaxe Penicillin. Am 06.10.2003 fanden die Pfleger Punjab tot auf. Die Krankheit war also in kurzer Zeit t\u00F6dlich verlaufen. Die ersten Angaben zur Todesursache lauteten auf eine Darminfektion. Eine Menge Blut wurde in seinem Darm gefunden. Als Ursache von Punjabs fr\u00FChen Tod wurde letztlich eine Salmonellen-Infektion angegeben. Inwieweit diese auch mit Cocos Tod zusammenh\u00E4ngt, bleibt unklar. Innerhalb weniger Wochen verlor der Zoo zwei Elefanten. Auch Punjabs Bruder Santosh starb mit nur knapp zehn Jahren in P\u0142ock.
