They are featured on the G.F.S. Olympus, Norion, G.F.S. Valhalla, Elysia and the Pirate Homeworld. There is also one on Bryyo in the Federation Landing Site. Elsewhere on Bryyo they are replaced by other devices such as pumps and levers, but the Pirate devices recording the status of the Shield Generators in Bryyo Fire and Bryyo Thorn Jungle use Pirate hand scanners for activation. Samus's Gunship in Corruption also requires her to scan her hand to verify her identity before she can move to other landing sites or planets. A hand scanner (or scanner) is a hand-held scanning device used by various species and organizations, such as the Klingons in the 23rd century. Assault squads would be equipped with hand scanners to help them find their prey. The hand scanners that were utilized by the United Earth Starfleet of the 22nd century would be a precursor to what would eventually be known as the tricorder. (ENT episode & novelization: Broken Bow; Seekers novel: Point of Divergence)

(ENT episode & novelization: Broken Bow; Seekers novel: Point of Divergence) In 2254 the hand scanners of a squad led by Toth were effected by something causing pattern distortion, preventing them from tracking their target, Christopher Pike. This prompted their impatient commander, Kaaj, to instead use to squad's com signal as a weapons lock for orbital bombardment, costing the squad's lives, but failing to kill Pike. (EV comic: "The Flat, Gold Forever") In 2268, Ming Xiong gave a 22nd century hand scanner to Stephen Klisiewicz, which contained a copy of all the research collected on Operation Vanguard and modified to not hook-up directly to a computer interface. It was given to Klisiewicz during the final time they'd meet, prior to Xiong's death during the Battle of Vanguard. In August, 2269, Klisiewicz accessed information on the Taurus meta-genome from the scanner to undo the genetic engineering the Shedai had done to the Tomol, while withholding the details regarding the scanner from Dr. Anthony Leone, they were able to revert the Tomol back to their true being. Upon learning of Klisiewicz's use of the meta-genome research, Captain Atish Khatami confiscated the hand scanner, though, she was unsure of how to proceed further with it than locking it away. Contemplating whether or not to inform Admiral Heihachiro Nogura, destroy it, or keep it around for the possibility of encountering another species violated by the Shedai.
