The son of Eileen Prince and her Muggle husband, Tobias Snape, Severus was cursed with a childhood filled with pain and suffering due to his father's alcoholism and abusiveness and his mother's unwillingness to stand up for him; the only light in his life was Lily Evans, a Muggle-born Witch who lived nearby. The two became best friends and Severus fell deeply in love with Lily, and he taught her everything he knew about the magical world. In 1971, Severus began attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and was Sorted in Gryffindor, the same house as Lily.

The two became best friends and Severus fell deeply in love with Lily, and he taught her everything he knew about the magical world. In 1971, Severus began attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and was Sorted in Gryffindor, the same house as Lily. While at Hogwarts, Severus was at odds with several of his housemates, namely two pure-blood wizards; James Potter and Sirius Black, who called themselves the "Marauders". The duo made Severus a prime target due to his upbringing and friendship with Lily, which James envied. They would harass Severus for much of their time at Hogwarts, which came to a head in their fifth year, when Severus and Remus "declared war" on the Marauders, effectively starting a civil war within Gryffindor. The "war" eventually ended after the Marauders admitted defeat during dinner in front of the entire hall, which came about after the . During his fifth year, after witnessing his father beat his mother over a minor disagreement, Severus snapped; he led his father out into the woods with the Confundus charm, killed him, transfigured his body into a twig and buried it, leaving his bloody wallet nearby to be discovered. Afterwards, his mother married Lyall Lupin, Remus Lupin's father; as such, Remus became his stepbrother. Severus changed his surname to his mother's maiden name, Prince, and graduated from Hogwarts in 1978 with seven N.E.W.T.s.
