Our biggest players were all in BRO2, and there were substantially fewer GOON bases in the lower galaxies than there were in the teens. Many of the BRO3 members felt that BRO2 didn't do enough to help us with taking out the GOONion bases. There were many angry threads about this on the off-site forum. "Out here in the open Herman, a Major with the Nexus Troopes, felt exposed. His company had been ordered to accompany the twelve brothers to a ridge, 6000 units out from the main Nexus positions. Herman, glanced over his shoulder at the small group of Brothers, they still hadn't moved. For days they had just sat there. He scanned around the camp perimeter. This position was open, very open, he didn't like it. The figures sat in a loose circle away from the rest of the company. Brother benjamin opened his eyes slowly as the trance faded. His limbs ached. For 6 hours they had maintained the thought image, a Psychic Technique, rendering them \"invisible\" through the power of thought suggestion. He looked around at the others, each facing inwards, they were in deep concentration. Father Tristian lifted his head and pulled back his cowl that covered his face. \"Come Brothers, the time has come!\" The Brothers rose. Dropping their habits to the ground, they began to calmly unwrap the embroidered cloths that protected their Natas, the ornate weapons that were unique to the Brotherhood. Each Nata staff was psy-linked to the Brother-Warrior. Through this link, the Brother could mould the Psychic energy of the Nata to form a cutting edge, a heavy waited hammer, serrated saw, whatever was required. Herman watched from a distance, curious. He looked back towards his men, beckoning the young corporal to refill his mag. That was when he saw them....The Borkians! The speed and ferocity of the attack momentarily stunned the Troopers. By the time Herman had leapt to his feet, shouted a warning and drawn his Stormer, nearly half of his men were dead. He cut one of the attackers down in a controlled burst of automatic fire from his Stormer. Fighting down his initial panic he began to exert his will on those around him. The Troopers began to fight and move towards their Major. Twenty Troopers managed to reach the Major's position. Surrounded on all sides they fought stubbornly with the savage determination of the doomed. Captain Zecha and his Borkians had attacked from out of the sky. Their Warfins allowed them to make short controlled flights - Herman guessed they had launched the attack from the far side of the ridge. It would only be a matter of time before he and the rest of his men were overrun. Then the Brothers moved to the attack. They fought with ease. Their movements lacked the ferocious activity of the other warriors. Their fighting flowed. Their Natas were yielded with precision, eloquently penetrating the defence of their adversary to land a single swift deadly blow. The brothers did not shout, they did not scream in battle rage or fear. Each Brother concentrated on their inner colour, a calming aura with which they dressed themselves. Brother Benjamin fought effortlessly. Each hissing arc of his Nata cut down another of the foe. The Borkians were caught completely by surprise. The Brothers had been hidden by the suggestion planted in the intruder's minds. The Borkians simply did not see them until it was too late. The battle ended as suddenly as it had started. Herman looked about him...only twelve of his men remained.Father Tristian smiled his face serene. \"Thank you Major, we have completed our mission. Zecha and his Borkians are dead. I am sorry we could not inform you of your role in this assignment but had you known, your thoughts may have betrayed you!\" With that, Tristian and his Brothers joined in a single prayer then filed back across the moor towards the Nexus lines........FILE TERMINATED"@en . . "I nodded, watching intently. I was always in awe whenever my friend Joshua pulled off these card tricks. \"So, after all that, wouldn't it be amazing if your cards were the only ones face up in the deck? Not only that, the other three cards of the same value of your selections are somehow to the right of your cards as well.\" I stared in bewilderment. This trick was easily his best out of all the ones he had shown me. \"How about we play cribbage now?\" I asked, \"since there's nothing to do in this town.\" \"Alright, fine. I was thinking we could walk to the store or something and get some energy drinks and try to pull an all nighter, but you're pro-\" \"What the hell? Dude, the nearest building is about five miles away. It's about fifteen degrees out. I understand that you are built like some sort of supernatural polar bear from Neptune, but normal people like me cannot walk that distance in this temperature without suffering some sort of health problem.\" Joshua nodded in agreement. We spent the next few hours in the basement playing cribbage, garbage, and a few hands of poker. He was never the type to lose. In fact, I really did not feel comfortable with him shuffling or dealing the cards because I was quite wary of his skills with cards and sleight of hand, and knew that he would most likely attempt to stack the deck when he started losing. He was obviously doing it tonight, for I don't know any other cribbage game in which one player can get 5555(J) with the crib, 4456(6), and 10JQ5(5) with the crib, all in a row. Needless to say, he double skunked me in that game. Despite the frustrations of losing to a card magician, the night was going very well. I hadn't seen Joshua in a few years and was eager to catch up with him. In reality, it is my fault we lost touch; I had gotten too caught up in my girlfriend, other friends, family, and college life to remember an elementary/grade school friend. I felt horrible. He seemed lonely, he never had a lot of friends, and not many people want to make the long journey to his house, especially considering its desolate location. He seemed to be occupying himself well, though. He became very well versed in the ways of card magic, manipulating a simple deck of cards in manners that I never thought possible. He was also reading a considerable amount, especially encyclopedias and non-fiction titles in order to, as he says, \"increase his knowledge about the planet around us.\" He was now a walking Wikipedia. \"You know, the playing card originated in Ancient China. The first examples of playing cards date back to the Tang Dynasty, somewhere in the 800s,\" Joshua explained, \"and they were spreading throughout the Asian Continent by the turn of the 1100s. The playing cards we know today were known as the Mameluke cards, with 52 cards, except the suits were polo sticks, coins, cups, and swords. Oh, and by the way, that was misdirection. Here are four aces.\" Damn it, fooled again. No matter how many times he explains stuff to me and then pulls a random card trick out of nowhere, I fall for it. Every. Single. Time. The conversation slowly shifted to our family life. In all honesty, I do not remember much of his family. Whenever I would come over in my youth, we would always go straight downstairs to hang out. I was never sure why, and whenever I brought up the subject, Joshua just shook his head and said not to ask. I think his mother might have been mentally ill or something because she was always looking down and never said a word to anybody. I don't think I have ever heard her talk. Maybe she just didn't like me. I'm not sure. Which was unfortunate for him, because whenever we were at my house, my mother would greet him with open arms. My father would ask him about his day, play football with us, and play cards with us. Sure, my older brother teased us a bit, but that is expected of older brothers. Most of the time, he played with us as well. I could tell that, at times, Joshua was extremely depressed at my house. I could only assume it was because of the fact that he wanted what I had, a family that seemed to be involved with their child. I would try to talk about his sadness at my house as well, but I would be brushed off much in the same way as if I asked at his house. \"So, is your dad still really into football, man?\" Joshua asked. I replied, \"Yeah. Him and the Chicago Bears... I swear he purposely tried to run over somebody wearing a Packers jersey once. I'm slightly worried for the man, to be honest.\" Joshua laughed as he dealt another poker hand. 2-7 offsuit. No wonder. I thrust my cards onto the middle of the table in frustration. Joshua glanced at me with a peculiar eye before looking at the cards to shuffle them. \"Don't look at me like that, Josh. Let me guess, Ace King of diamonds or some crap like that. You are definitely hacking the cards.\" Joshua rolled his eyes and said, \"For the last time, I am not doing anything to these cards but shuffling them. Just because I can do card tricks does not mean I cheat in every card game. This is why being a magician sucks at times, no one trusts you when you touch cards.\" He put down the cards after shuffling, at which point I grabbed them. Just as I thought, two jacks in the second and fourth position in the deck. The same round in which he was supposed to deal to me first. How convenient. At this point, I began shuffling the cards. Joshua sighed as the cards flew everywhere. What can I say? I am no card master; I barely know how to shuffle. But hey, at least I had a chance of winning now. Maybe. I guess. Probably not. He will still hack the cards even though I'm shuffling them. He has done it before, after all. I looked at Joshua and asked, \"So, how's your mom doing?\" He looked up and glared at me. I stopped shuffling the cards, quickly becoming aware that I probably shouldn't have asked that question so quickly. I apologized for asking and continued shuffling. He stared at his lap, fiddling with the zipper on his worn leather jacket. His breathing slowed down as his lips cocked to the side of his face, almost as if he was trying to stop himself from crying. He quickly glanced to the wall on his left before returning his stare to the bottom of his jacket, as if to throw a tear off of his face without me noticing. I put the cards down. Feeling like I just killed somebody, I asked, \"I'm really sorry man. Do you wanna talk about it? I know we haven't hung out for a while, but we were like best friends throughout grade school. You were there for me, I was there for you. I still have your back man, I haven't forgotten you.\" He looks at me and says, \"Then how come you never called me? Or messaged me? I was right here the entire time.\" Damn it... He started laughing and shaking his head. \"I was always here. It was me that was here. The guy that was with you throughout elementary and grade school. Remember? It was me, man. Your family was great, and mine was fucked up. But I sucked it up, and was happy for you. Despite the fact I was dying inside. Because I loved you man. Remember? We were like family. We were family. We even told each other that in Mrs. Reiney's seventh grade algebra class, remember? The last class of the year? When I saw you crying after you got rejected by that girl? I cheered you up, and you said I was a brother to you. Since when does family abandon each other? Family never leaves each other man. Ever.\" I was the worst friend ever. I could see the pain in his eyes; I could see my friend trying as hard as he could to fight back his tears. I left him alone after all he did for me. We were family, I was his brother, and he was mine. I was his only brother, and I left him... He started laughing again as he pulled out a Marlboro Red 100 and lit it. \"You smoke?!\" I shouted. He just nodded and smiled. His emotions raging, he continued chuckling and smiling as he sat back in his chair, placing his feet upon the table. He beckoned for the cards, I gave them to him. He began fanning them, shuffling them, and doing all sorts of shuffling tricks with the cards as he took intermittent puffs of his cigarette. He never so much looked at me; he seemed fixated on the wall. Eventually, he took a glance at me. He still had that same smile on his face, shuffling the cards, smoking his cigarette. When his cigarette was finished, he dropped it on the floor, stomped on it, picked it up, and flicked it into the next room. Joshua looked at me for a second. He nodded at me, raised one finger as if asking me to wait, got up, and walked into the next room. After a minute, he came back to the table with a medium sized black bag. It was clear that there was something in it, but I wasn't sure what. Joshua continued staring at me with this unsettling smile as he fumbled around in the bag. I became anxious as the bag started making clinking noises. Joshua looked inside the bag, shrugged his shoulders, and gently put the bag in the middle of the table. He began laughing again, this time louder. He slowly pulled down the bag, unveiling its contents. \"You drink?\" Joshua asked, as the bag revealed a bottle of whiskey and a shot glass. I sighed in relief and shook my head. Joshua removed the cap of the bottle and took a massive swig. He set the bottle and shot glass to the side, clasped his hands, and placed his arms on the table. \"I'm sorry man. You don't deserve this, I know I'm acting weird,\" Joshua explained, \"and it's my fault. But, you gotta understand. My mother died recently.\" My eyes widened. \"When?\" I inquired. Joshua sat back in his chair. \"A few weeks ago. I just saw her foaming white stuff at the mouth and there was nothing I could do. She was suffering from some illness; I can't remember what it was. The important thing is, she was prescribed a medication that she happened to be severely allergic to. It killed her.\" I looked into his eyes with empathy. \"I don't mean to ask this, but... Was that why she was sad all the time?\" Joshua laughed a little more. He reached over for his whiskey and poured a shot for himself. He drank it quickly, after which he offered some to me. Refusing once again, he took another swig from the bottle. He pulled out another cigarette, lit it, and explained, \"No man. She was sad because I was messed up.\" \"What do you mean?\" I asked, \"You seemed like a pretty happy kid.\" Joshua took a long drag of his cigarette. \"The senses deceive the mind, my friend. I started becoming very irritable, impulsive, and violent. I started forgetting who I was. I didn't know what was happening to me, so I had to stay close to my mother. I couldn't leave her alone. At school, I secretly had lockets of her hair in my pockets at all times, to make sure she was still with me. You actually helped me deal with all this stuff, even though you never really knew what was going on. But, the fact of the matter was, my mother could not take it. Whenever she tried going to the store without me, I would hold on to her leg and not let go. I would dig my nails into her leg so there was no way she could shake me off. \"Heh, I remember the first time she brought a man she was dating home... I pulled a knife on him. I remember her telling me I would have to eventually move out when I was older... I started punching her. I had to be with her at all times, no matter what. Nobody was going to get in my way, not even her. Why do you think I never had friends? They didn't like me, the crazy kid. I was depressed at my mother's house because it seemed like she didn't want to be with us, and I was depressed at your house because my mother wasn't there. That's why my mom never said a word. She was avoiding an episode from me.\" My eyes were in an unbroken gaze with his. Learning this information was giving me an unusual feeling. It was giving me the answers I was looking for about his family life for all these years, however, if what he is saying is true, then I could have almost gotten beaten up at any moment in time when I was young. Joshua took another drag of his cigarette and continued, \"Eventually, my mom had enough. She took me to a psychiatrist to talk about what had been happening to me. I was excited, because I thought I might be able to convince a professional that my mother needed to stay with me forever, that I was an unfit person or something. Instead, after a couple visits, I was told that I had a severe case of borderline personality disorder with some antisocial features. Apparently, I was crazy. They tried putting me on all these medications, but none of that psychotherapy pill crap worked. Whiskey does, though.\" He took another swig of whiskey and laughed. \"Eventually I ended up going into a mental hospital. This was the first time I saw a lot of my family members. Well, remember seeing them anyway. Maybe I saw them as a baby, I don't know. But I started liking them a lot. Like, really, a lot. I wanted them in my life. \"I figured, if I act normal, they will stay. If I say what they want, they will stay. So, as soon as I got out of the mental hospital, I acted all normal and happy and, as a result, I built a relationship with my family. I had a family that, hopefully, would never leave. Oh, and don't worry about the time frame. All this hospital stuff happened after you walked out, buddy.\" Great, he keeps bringing that up. Brushing the snipe off, I inquire, \"Do you still talk to the rest of your family?\" \"Not exactly.\" The smile disappeared from his face. He put his feet down as he slammed the chair legs against the ground, glaring at me. One of his eyes seemed to be twitching, but I couldn't tell. Beginning to feel intimidated, I started thinking of excuses to leave. I looked at the time, and quickly thought of something. I widened my eyes and explained, \"Damn it! I have to be home in like two minutes, my girlfriend said she would be over to watch a movie. I might get laid, so I don't want to miss it. She's kind of anal about timing, so if I'm not on time she'll be pissed, and I'll just be stuck watching the Titanic while having blue balls. I gotta go, dude.\" \"Well, you gotta help me first. You can't leave yet.\" \"Dude, I gotta go.\" I got up to leave. As I was walking away, Joshua grabbed my shoulder and whispered in my ear, \"The doors are locked, brother.\" I looked at him with pleading eyes, begging him to let me leave. Clearly he had too much to drink and he needed to sober up, I really don't like dealing with drunken people. Plus, if his past really happened and there is alcohol in his system, I don't want to be around for the aftermath. \"Just help me out, man. We're family, remember?\" Joshua smiled, inviting me back into the basement room. I agreed, hoping that, if I helped him out, I would get out more quickly. He began shuffling the cards again, looking back and forth at the walls. He stared at his feet for a few seconds, and then looked back at me. Turning his gaze back at the cards, he laughed once again. He smiled, quickly raised and lowered his eyebrows, and threw a playing card into the next room. The card struck an old chest. It got stuck in-between the lid and the rest of the chest. Joshua nodded triumphantly, gleefully shouting, \"Score! You see, I have been practicing that for years! Not only am I a magician with sleight of hand card placement, deck manipulation, and card counting, but I can throw the damn things too! Now isn't that impressive, brother?\" Joshua beckoned towards the card, instructing, \"Can you go get that for me? I'd like to try again.\" I nodded. I walked over to the chest and tried to pull the card out. It was quite well jammed in the slit of the chest, I couldn't seem to get it out. Joshua was good. I looked at him, shaking my head at the fact that I cannot get the card out. \"I'm better than I thought!\" Joshua laughed, \"Just open the lid then.\" I wrestled with the latch and finally got it off. Upon doing so, the lid of the chest jumped up an inch. Startled, I threw open the lid of the chest in order to avoid any further surprises. The playing card fell to the outside of the chest, but I was unable to grab it, for I was paralyzed by the fact that a decaying corpse was crumpled up within the chest. Joshua came up behind me, placed his arm around me, smiled, and told me, \"You see, my mother never actually left. She's always here with me. She always will be. I love her, man. I love her so much.\" He went upstairs. I'm not sure what was worse, the stench or the appearance of the corpse. I could still see the white foam caked around her mouth. He came downstairs with a tarp. Carefully, he laid it by her side, \"Be careful moving her, I'm not sure how fragile the bones are; usually I don't keep them above ground this long.\" Joshua saw the shock on my face, and continued, \"Don't worry, you'll see.\" He gently picked up his mother and placed her on the tarp. After wrapping the tarp around her, he instructed me to pick up one side. I stood there, frozen. He simply cocked his head to the side and smiled, insinuating some sort of threat that I couldn't even comprehend. I quickly grabbed the end of the tarp. Joshua gestured me to calm down, at which point we hauled the wrapped corpse to the backyard. Joshua went back in the house and came back out with two dirty shovels. He went into the yard, thought a moment, and stood on a specific spot, pointing to the ground. \"This is the spot, right here. I think, I'm not too sure. I haven't done this in a while, so I won't be mad if you hit a skull bone or foot or something and break it. Just be careful, though. We're trying to avoid accidents here.\" Seeing my look again, Joshua explained, \"It's my family. My family can never leave me. I'm happy with them here. I love them.\" I took a shovel and walked over to where he was standing. I don't remember making the first few incisions into the ground; I was in a complete trance. I only remember what Joshua said to me as we were digging. \"It's kind of cool, you know. Two brothers, bonding. This is what the movies talk about. Two bros, doing stuff that they have in common. You love your family, you love spending time with them. I love my family, I love spending time with them. And here we are, coming up with a creative way to share that ideal with each other. With each shovel-full of dirt, I can feel my connection with you getting stronger. I know you're always there for me, no matter what. Whether it be defending me against someone who is making fun of me, helping me out in a financial bind, or helping me spend time with my family. You should come over and spend more time with my family, I think they really like you. Especially my mother. You are the only friend to ever touch her in her entire lifetime, do you know tha-\" Clink. \"Shit. Sorry. Judging by the skull... Yeah, that's a hole made by a .22 right there, so that seems to be Uncle Ray I believe. Yep, that's him. Don't worry, he's not mad at you. He'll get over it in a few minutes; he's always been hot tempered. Ah, well.\" Joshua gently rubbed the skull. \"I knew this would be a tight fit, but it's the perfect place. This is where my mother and I hugged all the time. This is where I held onto her and wouldn't let her go. This is where I showed her how much I love her. This is where I gave her the cyanide to help her with her illness. This is where I showed her my eternal love, and made it so we can spend eternity together. This spot. I was saving it for you, mom. And I'm sharing the moment with you, my brother. We are a family. All of us. Hmm... And, I think this hole is deep enough now.\" Joshua grabbed the shovel from me and gingerly placed his mother in the grave. He covered the grave with the freshly dug dirt, made the ground even, kissed the dirt, and embraced it for a couple minutes. He then looked up to me from the ground and offered to show me around. I obliged, terrified of what would happen if I refused. Joshua pointed to random spots in the ground, painting a picture of his family tree as he did so. He pointed to his Grandma Eleanor, who he loved because of her cookies. She was buried by the fence. He pointed to his Aunt Sandy, who was buried three feet to the right of her. He loved her because of her stories. He pointed to his Aunt Misty, who was buried four feet to the left of Uncle Ray. He loved her because she taught him to play cards. He pointed to Uncle Ray, whom had been hit earlier. Joshua loved him because he had taught Joshua how to fight. He continued pointing to random spots on the ground for another few minutes, counting about another nine graves. He finished by pointing to another spot by the door, however, he didn't say anything. He started reminiscing about the past, telling me, \"I remember when we first met. We had to work on some sort of coloring project in the first grade for Ms. Aeron, remember? I mean who colors in first grade? You said that, I remember it so fondly. I remember playing basketball in the third grade. We sucked, but we beat the two notorious athletes. It was the best day of our lives, nothing could get us down. I remember how, in Mr. Talcarney's fourth grade class, we both got 100 on a history test while everyone else got 80 or something like that. You remember that? Everybody thought we cheated. We really weren't good students, were we?\" I shook my head. \"But we were good friends. Best friends. We stood up for each other. We were there for each other. We loved each other. We were brothers, day in and day out. From the day we met each other. No matter what. Always. We always will be. You will be the best man at my wedding, as will I be yours. What college do you go to? I'll be your roommate. We'll do all this stuff together man. That's what brothers do. We have this connection now. We did this together. You are a part of my family, they know you, they recognize you. They love you just as I do, they know that you are my brother. They know how we just danced like idiots in the middle school dances because we were afraid of girls talking to us. But you got that one girl, and I was so excited.\" I smiled nervously. \"But you didn't get me one. That needs to change. Brothers share. You have a girlfriend? Does she have a friend? Or a sister? Well, you should hook me up. If she doesn't have that, then maybe we can share her. Love triangle kind of thing. Or maybe you can just give her to me and you can find another girl, I don't know. We'll figure it out, this is all brainstorming, brother. Whatever you decide, I'll be behind you. As long as you stick by my side, because you know I'm gonna stick by yours. Because we're brothers.\" He grabbed my shoulder and held me as close as possible to him. He kissed me on the cheek and smiled. Looking at him, I shuddered at the enormous grin he had, as well as his beady eyes reflecting the moonlight. \"I don't want to hold you back from your girlfriend anymore. Go to her. Tell her about me. Tell her you have your family back, once and for all. This is a joyous occasion, brother! Spread the good word! Come back tomorrow and tell me about your experiences with her!\" I took a deep breath and replied, \"I can't come ba-\" Joshua's eyes became enraged. \"Brother, of course you can! Families spend all day together! They live with each other! I understand we cannot do that yet, so we have to just see each other every day as much as possible for now!\" I started backing away. Joshua started advancing forward in a calculated manner. He lowered his voice. \"Brother. I understand that it might not be possible to see me every day, or make me your roommate, or get me a girlfriend, or share everything, or become complete brothers like I ask. I understand. "Well, to understand what went on, I'll need to fill you in a little bit on BRO's structure before/during the GOON war. We were originally like the GOONion in that we were so big we needed multiple guilds to hold all of our members. we were organized into 4 guilds, based on the galaxies we were based in. In B00-09 we had BRO2, BRO3 was in B10-19, BRO in B20-29, and BRO4 in B30-39. So, during the GOON war, we got our asses handed to us. After the war ended, the angry continued, until many of the main people from BRO2 left, forming Omega. Much of BRO2 and BRO4 went with them. That started other people from BROX (which is what we were called to avoid confusion about whether you were talking about the entire guild or just the subguild BRO) leaving to other guilds. This is when BOB was formed, and why we have pretty good relations (and a sort of unofficial NAP with them, as far as I can tell). If there's anything you don't get, or if you want to know anything else, let me know. BROx was at war, and all of the guilds were badly hurt the war stopped but some of their allies needed help so BRO2 went to help our allies, while the others recovered (but BRO4 was very small at the time, and in the upper galaxies) after awhile, the other guilds had recovered, but BRO and BRO3 didnt want to join the war after lots of arguing, BRO2 told BRO4 they were gonna be leaving BROx and asked them if we wanted to join them...each of us was given the option of going to one of the other BROx guilds or to BRO2 to break off almost everybody went to BRO2, and we broke off to form Omega - From Lord Ted's Beta history Book SKAL SEZ It is with some sorrow that I write these lines. Maybe sorrow is too strong a word for sentiments about a browser game. But then again I've been a member of The Brotherhood since January 2007 (a strange, to say the least, period for me in rl). What follows is a (very long, scroll to bottom of last post from me for short version) description of that period and an incomplete history of one of the most influential guilds of AE, Beta server, but at the same time an autobiography of mine in Beta (an explanation for the obvious bias). I am no holder of the absolute truth, nor I presume I can distant myself from events I took part, in so much that I can describe them with complete objectivity. So, everyone is welcome to discuss and possibly disagree with my point of view (or my memory, I'm unsure about many things myself anyway). Also, there are parts I don't know much about (e.g. the very early days) and parts where I will mostly be giving my personal opinion. For other views and a more detailed description of BRO's early days you can check this thread Bro was founded by The Friar at the start of the Beta server. It had no official connection with any Alpha guilds and its original concept was that it would always be neutral, part of no alliances and act a training guild for noobs. Initially it grew mainly in B04 and B09, with Friar being GM and Haze 2nd in command. After some fights with BORG (mainly Kham) it started expanding fast and grew a lot. Then it was renamed BRO2 and Haze became GM, while Friar created a new BRO and started recruiting in the B10s (the pattern continued, although somewhat distorted, a cause for some confusion ever since :P). Somewhere during that time, there was a big war (and the \"finest point for BRO\" according to its founder against a coalition of guilds, which BRO effectively won (see that thread mentioned above for more details). I think that was about when BRO signed a BP with AA (one of its enemies during that war). Soon afterwards BRO also grew a lot and was renamed BRO3 lead by Event Horizon, while Friar went to the B20s to form yet a new BRO. That's when I joined BRO (just before it became BRO3 and while Friar was still the GM). At this point, BRO2 was becoming very strong in the lowers and BRO3 was growing up to be a sizeable force in the B10s. While the lowers were mostly friendly for The Brotherhood (AA and BORG ruled there), in the B10s there was a new contestant. Namely the Goonion which was recruiting heavily there (not sure how Goons operate and their general internet history, but I guess they mass-introduce their members into a new game). At the same time, the main non-allied opponent in the lowers was EAA (Evil Axis Alliance). Still, very soon after I joined, somewhere in February 2007 there was a brief war with CM (Crimson Mercenaries) which was mostly fought in the teens (but my awareness about global events was hazy at most back then, so I may be wrong). I remember I had 100k mobile fleet back then (:D) and after some initial successes in B10 I was overwhelmed and received help from B11-B16, mostly from the people that much later formed BoB (which was one of the reasons I always considered them friends ever since). We won that war and peace was signed soon after. Having just made my first BSs (an uber ship I though back then), I decided to go on a field trip, far away from B10 to the higher teens (using a lvl3-4 JG, belonging to EH). Although my initial target was some guy in B16, I ended up in B19, home of the (then) new guild, The Lions of Zion. I think my initial fleet there was a few hundred 1000s and I occupied some 15-20 Lion's bases within a couple of days. Looking back, I must admit that, with a few exceptions, they showed commendable resilience and unity in fighting me off. One thing lead to the other and before long there were big (for the time and galaxy) piles and lots of e-hate spread all over B19. To add to it there was a lot of forum-warring (which I don't particularly like) from both sides and before more people could get involved it ended with a more-or-less fair compromise (there's a very amusing thread somewhere, but I won't search for it). However it left some ill-feeling between them and me (and some others from BRO3 who had to deal with the situation). After some time of relevant peace (and maybe because of it) and while there were talks about a bigger war with either EAA or GOONs (or both), people in charge of BRO3 decided they would teach Lions a lesson. Some random events and/orforum posts sparked it, but the truth was that there were bills to settle (I had no part in the decision-making process back then). So a mighty BRO3 armada was sent to B19 to kill the pests once and for all (I had a more sizable mobile of almost 1mil by then, regrettably made up again of mostly BSs :P). To cut a long story short, we occupied about all Lion bases (they had a lot in B19), paying a stupidly high cost for it (a few Lion members showed an exceptional skill in guerrilla tactics and I'm sure we both learned a lot from that invasion). Soon after we CFed, having gained a lot more respect for each other. We then entered a dark era for The Brotherhood, which was really the beginning of then end. BRO2 (the original BRO guild, situated in the lowers) was mostly at peace during that time and they needed some action. They pressed for war against The Goonion (a big threat for BRO3 in the teens), while BRO3 would prefer fighting EAA (a big threat for BRO2 in the lowers), after re-building from the Lion campaign. There was a lot of heated disagreement on our internal forums back then and a lot of hidden discussion (with BRO in the B20s having not much of a voice since they were just noobs at the time). Shoko-koko had become GM of BRO3 after EH's disappearance and Haze was still GM of BRO2 iirc. Finally BRO2 declared on the Goons and BRO3 declared on EAA. The exact way it happened doesn't really matter in my opinion. You can blame anyone, everyone or no-one in particular, but the result was that different parts of The Brotherhood were fighting on different sides of a war, since EAA and GOON were at it by then. At the time I quite strongly disagreed with the decision, voicing my concerns over BROs' unity, but it seems most people didn't agree with me. There was even an opinion that we were \"balancing\" enemy forced fighting like that (not, I repeat NOT an actual plan, not one I know of at least, just an opinion on the turn of events). We might have been doing just that, but the disagreement and heated discussion alone were the first big blow to the guild's unity. Because it seems that people need sentimental as well as logical reasons to feel closer to (or feel enmity against) another guild in AE. And the best sentimental reason is having fought side by side. That war went pretty well tbh, since everyone fought where they were outnumbering the enemy and at the end, BRO was stronger and its potential enemies weaker. I think that was when EAA begun losing its high rank, as a side effect. In any case, the general feeling between BRO2 and BRO3 wasn't the best possible and heated discussions continued in internal forums. As a note, I must say that during that time we had a couple of GM changes, with Shoko, Skale, Garlax and maybe a couple of others assuming the post one after the other. Shoko's efforts to better inter-BRO relations by moving between the guilds (including BRO int he B20s which was also growing by that time) were mostly fruitless. The more hot-headed in both guilds were seeing to it that the differences became greater than smaller over the next period. On a more personal note, I must say I was becoming stronger in B10, at some point got the position of Galaxy commander and I was one of the stronger players in the galaxy ever since, partially because it was the only Galaxy in the teens not infested with Goons (\"infested\" is a joke, I personally have or had nothing special against them). At some point the discussion reached a dead-end and another war with Goons was brewing. It must be noted that all this time, BRO2 kept very close relationship with AA, who although a BP partner for all BRO, was mostly in communication with Haze and BRO2 in general. Events that unfolded later were partly also due to the fact that most of BRO3s didn't actually feel any particular connection with AA or regarded them as a major ally (and AA's presence in the teens was much lower than in the lowers). When The Brotherhood actually declared on the Goonion this time, it was as a whole officially, but BRO3 still had doubts. To an extent these were softened by BRO2's assurance that they would sent fleets to help in the teens. The first few days, BRO2 were hammering what little Goon presence there was in the lowers, while BRO3 were losing, but holding, in the teens. Then KwsW, who had an MDP with both BRO and GOOns decided to declare on BRO. I won't go into detail on that decision, it might have been reasonable to an extent, although personally I would have stayed out of it. What I can say however is that I think the very close relationship between GOONs and KwsW during the following months started right there. With that, BRO3 started getting really hammered, while BRO2 help was still underway (or not coming, if you believe some BRO3s). I clearly remember some BRO2s fighting in the teens with BRO3 and also remember a lot not landing in time. Views are divided, of course, and probably the truth is somewhere in the middle. BRO3s probably expected somewhat too much and too soon from BRO2s, while BRO2s had underestimated the damage to BRO3 and were doing too well in the lowers to be in a hurry to help in the teens. BRO was doing OK in the B20s, I think, as their enemies there were more or less the equally noobish to them. A strange turn of events made me make a lot of money, but not fight much the Goons. I had sent my mobile to B12-13 (don't remember exactly where) and we were ready for a big(ish) op, when PWOT (a small guild, located mainly in B10 and B11) decided to declare on BRO (not sure why atm). B10 residents turned back and with some help from CBC (a B10-based guild) we more or less wiped PWOT out in B10 and maybe also won some battles in B11. By the time that ended, and while some large(ish) BRO2 reinforcements from BRO2 were on the way to the mid-teens, the war ended. At this point, most BRO3s in B12-19 were practically ruined and had no fleet left to speak of. BRO2 were doing more or less fine (and so were we in B10). Of course, the exchanges on the forums reached new levels of \"heated\". Some secret discussions went on together with a couple of changes in BRO3 leadership (also in BRO2 if I remember correct). Then some of the best members of BRO3 announced to me they were moving out to form a new guild in B47. By best, I mean primarily strongest and better in fighting, but from my point of view, also best characters behind the nicknames. They were essentially my only \"friends\", as much as you can have friends you've never seen. I was offered to follow them (and was honored and pleased by the offer), but by that time I had grown too much accustomed to my old B10 to be ready to leave it. Maybe it was a mistake. I have since somewhat lost contact with Shoko (he has left Bob now), Skale, Garlax, Led and the other guys and if I want to be honest, I'd say I don't particularly like the way they have managed their absolute power in B47, but the persons I remember from back then were decent, friendly, always nice to talk to and generally good friends. I'll never fight them if I can help it. At about the same time, AA (and others) have declared on =T= and friends and BRO2 wanted to help AA. It was rumoured in BRO3 at the time that BRO2 were quicker to help AA than BRO3. True or false, it clearly shows the kind of sentiment between the two. I'm not sure about the exact time between CF with Goons and AA v T war (maybe the later even started just before the former), but it was too close together for the then destroyed BRO3. New disagreements and new accusations. I'm not sure, but I think the dispute over helping AA or not was what sparked the walk-out of the later BoB members from BRO3. In any case, BRO2 couldn't wait nay longer and declared on AA's enemies alone, while BRO3 would enter later. Another separate war for BROs, which didn't help things. At the time, I was actually against helping AA (sorry Hell.. eeer Macedonian :P), but said that since BRO2 declared we should do the same, for unity purposes alone. I wasn't heard and my views didn't help make any new friends either :D. In the meantime, BRO in the B20s was becoming a sizable force and a new guild was formed, BRO4 in the B30s. There seems to be some disagreement on whether it was formed by Friar (following the regular pattern) or BRO2 members, but it was for the time another member of the BRO family, which at the time was the biggest power in Beta, if you added up all four guilds. BRO3 was stalling its declaration against =T= and friends and BRO2 was pressing. If I remember correct the list of enemies BRO2 were fighting was becoming bigger by the day and at some point they started to really need BRO3's help. Part true, part not, BRO3 claimed still not been ready after the bashing from GOONs and still denied to enter the fray. Then, BRO2 caught us (well, caught me at least) by surprise and declared its independence as Omega. I still think that BRO4's members were somewhat mislead by their GM(s), essentially some older players, ex-BRO2 into joining en-masse the new Omega guild. I may be wrong, but in that other thread, at least one of them seems to admit it. By mislead I mean that they were essentially told \"we are leaving BRO which is collapsing and forming Omega\", instead of \"some of us asre leaving BRO and forming Omega, you can decide whether you want to follow us or not\". It's not terribly important anyway and made no real difference in following events, even more so, since the bulk of BRO4 was too noobish at the time (no offense, they were newer players simply). The split of Omega and the walk-out of the future BoBs left The Brotherhood with a weakened presence in the teens (with the exception of B10 and to an extent B11), no presence in the lowers, a good presence in the B20s in the form of BRO and little presence higher than that. At that point, Friar returned to BRO to help during the dire times and with him came summer (meaning I personally went on sim-mode, as I prefer the sea from B10 :D). After some discussion, it was decided that BRO3 and BRO would merge (into BRO, mainly for practical and tag-holding issues). The actual merge took way too long due to many reasons, but to an extent it also cleared BRO3 from inactives (I still remember some people logging, seeing they were mostly left alone in BRO3 and simply not following the order to move to BRO :P). Friar was too busy in rl at the time and another guy became GM of BRO3. I don't remember his name (and I'm sorry for that), but he was a good guy, a silent worker so to speak who helped a lot during that difficult times and went inactive soon after most people in BRO3 have moved to BRO. At some point then I found myself GM of BRO3, but that was mostly for practical reasons and what I did was essentially close-up BRO3 and arrange the farming of the last inactives. Then we were all in BRO, the only Brotherhood guild by then, with Akkarin, the former GM of the B20's BRO (correct me if I'm wrong at that) as the unified guild's GM. I must say here that during the summer of 2007 I was mostly inactive, setting queues and not doing much else. I tend to go away in weekends (YOU try to resist the old Greek summer-sun-sea sirens) and be generally busy. Also, Ceti had started and I was dedicating a lot of my limited free time there, a trend that went on after September, with few exceptions, mainly due to the looong war against Heiho from then till Christmas of 2007. After the merger, there was a lot of discussion about the future of BRO. It was a growing guild, but too spread-out over many galaxies, with too many \"gaps\" with little or no presence and it had both old and seasoned members and total noobs. The prevailing idea what to form a training guild and move all the noobs and new recruits there. Now, I may be somewhat wrong about the exact chronological order, but at about the time we were discussing this and before it actually happened, there was a \"friendly\" pre-arranged war against one of the GOON guilds (can't remember the name, the one with presence in the B20s, or B10s, or both). I personally didn't agree with that war and was sure nothing good would come out of it, but there were too many people with lots of fleet and lots of time in their hands who wanted to swing their e-peen a bit and I believe the leadership's decision was mostly made under pressure from those. In any case, we more or less got kicked in the behind in that short war, at least in the teens, while we maybe did better in other clusters. Personally I was at my busiest time in the Heiho war in Ceti at the time and didn't take much part in that friedly match. 4-5 days after it has started I realized people in the mid-teens needed help dearly (stupid of them to stay and fight while heavily outnumbered, specially during a friendly war, if you ask me, but still...) and by the time I sent my fleet there a couple of days later, the war ended (at least it was short). After that we had some time of peace and were able to arrange the details of the new training guild. As I said I didn't take much part in discussions back then and thus I'm open to discussion on what actually happened. Fact is that in a surprise move (well, I at least didn't have a clue it was coming), Akkarin announced that we have entered in an alliance with Omega and xGSx (btw, Grey Swords were my first guild in AE, from December 2006 to late January 2007 and I was happy to be allied to them, irrespective of other considerations). There no reason to discuss here whether it was a wise move and I'm sure different people will have different opinion on that. There was an opinion that the Goonion (having seen how weak we were during that friendly war) were planning on attacking us, so the alliance would essentially protect us from them. In my opinion (and to an extent as later events showed) it didn't do much in that respect. Most importantly, I've always thought that, partly due to luck and partly due to misconception, we ourselves, had named the Goonion as our Arch-rival (and Nemesis) while such thing wasn't true (for BRO3-->BRO at least, BRO2-->Omega had indeed appointed GOONs as their enemies right from the start, not sure why). To an extent we asked for what followed. We could have just as well seek an alliance with the Goonion and events (and BRO history) might have been totally different. But that's just me, I tend to be more realistic than sentimental when it comes to online game politics (and, the horror!!! I never \"hate\" anyone or any guild over some game). So BRO was in an alliance with Omega and GS and the new training guild was ready to start. At about that time (or maybe earlier, not sure) the great war between PM (mainly the old Borg), AA and friends against =T= and friends had started and it gradually involved most of Beta. Omega decides to enter the war on the side of AA (the old friendship) against =T=. At the same time, we form the training guild, called the Novitiate (NOV) with Devonian as GM and some older BRO members joining as instructors. As a note, I must say that at this point, BRO is made mostly of ex-BRO-of-the-20s members (whom I don't know much), a few here and there ex-BRO3 people in the B10s (good players most, no disrespect meant, just not a lot of them) and others newly recruited or loyal to the Brotherhood as a whole, in various Galaxies. And then disaster strikes :D. Well, depends on POV I guess, but the Goonion declaring on the Omega alliance is somewhat of a blow for BRO. Btw, the actual declaration which was posted by a member of PM (Alci, aka B5000) was obviously a joke, but due to the situation back then as explained below, it was somewhat uncalled for. Anyway, since Omega is already fighting the T alliance (and away from the Goons anyway, or at least half of Omega safe from Goons in the lowers) the brunt of the Goon attack falls onto BRO and GS (with GS being already weakened and a relatively small guild anyway). People in NOV are not spared and in general Goons heavily outnumbered us and are winning. In effect it was a fight between 1.5bil of Goons and 200-300mil of BRO and GS (numbers are off the top of my head, but about right). At the time I yelled at people to form strongholds where we could mount some resistance, with the first and obvious one being B10 since we already had a sizable force there and the only Goon presence were some ex-PWOTs (remember those? They had just merged into GOON). Unfortunately not many people listened. In B10 we more or less took all Goon bases and killed all their fleet (I made some 2-3mil profit killing 2 PWOT fleets of people that I had always fought against, those guys were really unlucky and both went inactive soon afterwards). We also made a few successful trips into the disputed territory of B11, while we waited for the invasion of B10 (that strangely never came-we would have fled anyway :P). Also, we had some isolated success in other galaxies (Amox and some others knew how to fight) but all in all we got our butts handed to us, of course. The way things were, with BRO already weakened, deprived from some of its oldest and best fighters, spread over many galaxies, somewhat disorganized from the building and starting of NOV and greatly outnumbered we had no chance. At the time, it seemed only logical to me that since GOONs had declared on a guild fighting the big war, the rest of the guilds on Omega's side should declare on the Goons (and I expected BRO to be decced by the T side in return of course). I personally contacted most GMs an people I knew from guilds involved but got nothing much. I understand that PM (and others) had ties with GOON and probably were aware of their intentions, but I still believe it was unfair on their part, if not towards BRO, at least towards Omega (although it was in fact BRO the member of Omega alliance that was getting hit byt the Goons mainly). In any case, there was no solution in sight and GOONs didn't seem willing to give us peace. Btw, I understand their reluctance and have no problem with it, but tbh, their way of stalling any peace talks (posting random jokes as an answer to CF proposals, pretending they have no way of reaching unified agreement etc) is the only thing I personally hold against them. Then, our GM, Akkarin, disgusted and fed up by the constant whining on our board, the obvious injustice done to our members, the reluctant responses by everyone to our cries for help and the \"impolite\" responses by Goons to our CF/Surrender proposals decides to step down. Now, I must say I have declined the position of one or the other BRO's GM for many reasons. Not saying to brag, but just as a note that I never liked or wanted the position. Still, I log one day to see I'm GM and Akkarin has set Vac. Mode while telling me he will probably quit. I'm somewhat annoyed by the whole situation myself and to an extent by Akkarin's handling of it. I proceed to write an angry announcement and a similarly angry post on the forums, mainly saying that we will either have peace or disband the guild to save our fleets. I want to believe that my actions during the time were misunderstood. To my defence I can say that I was personally doing just fine, having made a ton of money, killed many millions of enemy fleet and arranging new and similarly profitable attacks (to B11 mainly) with our guys gathered in B10. My main concern was the survival of those people (in the B-teens and elsewhere) who have been repeatedly hit very hard and were getting no help. With many millions of Goon fleet right next to them, I couldn't really help them by using force, so the only way was to either arrange a CF or go to the extreme of disbanding the guild and \"sending\" them to other guilds and safety. Anyway, at the end, a CF was agreed under the term that we leave the Omega alliance. Maybe the funniest thing is that not long after we CFed with GOONs with no-one from the many requested helping us against them, there was a huge alliance formed which declared on them.... With the war over, we were more or less in ruin and extremely weakened, partly from the war and partly because of NOV's declaration of independence. With the few exceptions mentioned above, our members didn't have any fleet to speak of and most of their bases were recovering from occupation. To add to that, the people in charge of NOV decided to declare their independence, right before the CF was agreed. Now, I want to make clear that judging from the state of BRO at the time, I have already decided that it couldn't survived as it was, mainly due to the fact it was extremely thinly spread. I then said that we needed to gather into a much smaller cluster of galaxies to survive. I proposed the B10s (as almost half our survived fleet belonged to people from there), but made it absolutely clear that that was not an order or anything to that effect. I stated that I understood if people disagreed and if that was the case I would simply go to find hoke elsewhere (and would urge just the people in B10 and B11 to follow me). As I said, I believe that was misunderstood as an order of \"come to B10 or get out\". The only thing I can say is that it was definitely not that, but maybe it could be misunderstood as such. In any case, aggravated by the fact that peace was not coming (although I made it clear I was doing my best and a CF was close) and by all that mentioned, NOV went independent. A couple of days later a CF was agreed, but it was too late. A lot of BRO's members, mainly in the B20s decided to move to NOV. As I said, I was certain that BRO couldn't survive as it was and I would have been the first to encourage the B20 people (most of NOV) to \"cluster-up\" had they asked my opinion. It was mostly the fact that I was not even informed that left a bitter taste. In addition, similar to BRO4's move to mega described above, I believe that to an extent people in NOV were not really given a clear and simple choice of whether they wanted to stay in an independent NOV or stay with their original guild. I know for a fact that a couple didn't even realize NOV was independent until after more than a month. Also, it seems at least strange that people located in B10 (BRO's stronghold at the time) would prefer to stay in NOV, which was located in the B20s and less than half the size of BRO at the time, so they would be \"better protected\", as I was old. In any case, it doesn't really matter anymore and the fact remains that they also got a CF from GOONs. Soon after some more people left (with my encouragement I must remind) to other guilds, strong in their Galaxies (mainly VE in the 30s, but elsewhere, too). I want to believe that the end result for the individual members of BRO (if not for the guild itself) was beneficial at the end. They survived their guild, which means that at least they survived. After all that drama, what mainly happened was that people left isolated in random galaxies were encouraged to join other guilds, strong there and gradually we were left with a core of B10 (and around) members. I suppose I could have tried to re-build The Brotherhood by recruiting etc, but I was never good at that. I never even wanted the GM position as I said. I even repeatedly asked that anyone with a viable \"survival\" plan present it to me and I'd be more than happy to transfer GM position and retire. No-one came (and I don't blame them). Moreover, I have since made clear that the actual BRO tag was free to take by anyone interested since I never presumed I held any special rights to it. Us, the people in B10, could just as well do with any temporary name until the plans we had went in effect. I was thanked but no-one seemed particularly interested. Even now, I'd prefer to see someone with some kind of ties to the old BRO to take over the tag and name (NOV, for example, BG as they are now known) than some random no-one with some ridiculous plans on how to, effectively, ridicule them. Hopefully, they will be able to carry on with respect to the original ideas and history of the guild. I'm open to requests or suggestions over the next few days. ............................................ So, we have come to the short version. It's with some sorrow that I say: BRO will be disbanding soon. What was left of it is joining other guilds (something for another thread). It was a pleasure fighting alongside many good people and a great fun interacting with most of them. We have plans for the future but we never forget our past. \"To all things comes a beginning\". P.S. I hold no grudge against anyone and I simply express my point of view on past events. You may of course disagree and are welcome to express your own opinion. The only thing I ask is to read carefully what I write (well, you're excused if you don't read carefully all that, but at least the part that concerns you or your disagreement) and try to understand my point before replying. It's a story about a group of 6 Super Nameks who are nomads that travel across space and conquer entire worlds to steal whatever value the planet had. They do so to fill the void in their lives, because of the feeling of being banished from their own home. But no matter how many planets they plunder, they still can't get rid of a sense of loneliness. As the group finds out through many hardships, the only thing that creates meaning in their lives is each other. The theme song for this story is Get Out Alive by Three Days Grace."@en . . . .
