. . . "Steve Gerber (1947-2008) was an American comic book writer best known as the creator of Marvel Comics character Howard the Duck. Famous for his runs on Man-Thing, The Defenders, Daredevil and many others, Geber was known for bucking trends with his skill for weaving social satire and absurdist comedy into traditional comic book adventures\u2014in one famous instance, his failure to meet a deadline on an issue of Howard led him to substitute the story with an illustrated prose piece detailing conversation between himself and the title character. His confrontational creative style and unusual brand of humour branded him as a wild card in the industry, a reputation that was punctuated by his possessiveness of his characters and in particular, a legal battle with Marvel Comics for ownership of Howard the Duck. Gerber served as the story editor for the third season of the Generation One animated series alongside Flint Dille and Marv Wolfman, but sadly never wrote any episodes of the series himself. Additionally, Dan DiDio recalls that Gerber pitched \"a wildly original take on Transformers\" for the Beast Machines animated series, but the details of this pitch are unknown. And the universe is a little worse off because of it. Gerber died on 10 February 2008, from complications stemming from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis."@en . Before Dave Sim's Cerebus, there was Gerber's Howard the Duck, a Deadpan Snarker cartoon character thrust into a world of real people and real problems. When Gerber left Marvel Comics over concerns about creator's rights (his Omega the Unknown having been taken from him, canceled, then summarily killed off by another writer), he fought for control of Howard. The legal costs drove him to bankruptcy, and he started the creator-controlled comic Destroyer Duck to try to alleviate the costs of the case. Gerber was joined by notable industry friends like Jack Kirby, who worked pro bono. He never regained the rights to his characters and spent years in seclusion from comics working in television on Transformers Generation 1, G.I. Joe, Dungeons and Dragons, and Thundarr the Barbarian, which he created. Though he never won his fight with The Industry, he helped blaze a trail for future writers to fight for their intellectual property, like Eastman and Laird (and the other guys behind the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund) and even creator-owned companies companies like Image Comics, and we can see how well that turned out! He also inspired authors not to shy away from difficult material, whatever their chosen medium. Neil Gaiman has cited Man-Thing as an influence for his own genre-stretching Sandman series. Gerber was inducted posthumously into the Eisner Award Hall of Fame."@en . . . . . "As a prolific comic book artist and editor, Gerber spent the majority of his career working at Marvel Comics. More recently, he worked on animated shows for Batman and Superman as well as the popular Japanese-made cartoon Yu-Gi-Oh! He also continued to work in comics, including assignments for DC Comics. In 2007, Gerber was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. He continued to work while undergoing various medical procedures and waiting for a lung transplant. He ultimately succumbed of his illness in a Las Vegas hospital at the age of 60. At the time of his death, he was writing Countdown to Mystery: Doctor Fate for DC Comics."@en .
