It existed from 1922 to 1991, when it was dissolved. Fifteen independent states emerged after its dissolution, with the Russian Federation assuming the Soviet Union's rights and obligations. From the end of World War II in 1945, there was a state of political and military tension between the United States and its NATO allies and the Soviet Union and its allies in the Warsaw Pact. This conflict was known as the Cold War, since it never escalated escalated to full scale fighting between the two sides, but there were regional wars, known as proxy wars, which were supported by the two sides. During the Cold War, there was a nuclear arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union, although no nuclear weapons were ever fired. The closest the Cold War ever came to escalating to full-scale nuclear war was during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. On October 24, 1962, the Cuban Missile Crisis had been going on for nearly ten days, and many people thought the world would end that week. Colonel Lomax and the retired Lieutenant General Leslie Groves went to Doc Brown's mansion to offer Emmett Brown a large sum of money to invent a time machine, in order to prevent it from ever happening. Emmett Brown showed them his prototype time machine, the temporal field capacitor. After a test, the two men are interested, and Groves informs Emmett that he'll never have to worry about funding again. After Lomax and Groves left, Emmett had worries that he could be ushering in an arms race through time, coupled with his regrets about ushering in the nuclear arms race of the Cold War through his participation in the Manhattan Project. He had a nightmare that saw Marty McFly travel from 1982, speaking Russian. He dreamed that he went to the future in the DeLorean time machine and saw the Soviet Union and the United States bringing soldiers through time to fight an unending war, as the two sides would always know the outcome and would continue to try to stop it. After waking up the next day, Doc sent a letter to himself through the temporal field capacitor to August 1, 1962, when he knew that he and his dog Copernicus would be safe asleep in the fireproof lab in Doc's garage. The process of sending the letter so far back in time led to a buildup of flux energy, leading to an electrical fire, destroying Doc Brown's mansion. In the new timeline, the two men never talk to Doc Brown, as they believe him to be an insurance thief."@en . "Europe"@en . . . . "1989"^^ . . "1991"^^ . . . . . . . . They established the Russian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic (renamed Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic in 1936), beginning a civil war between the revolutionary "Reds" and the counter-revolutionary "Whites." The Red Army entered several territories of the former Russian Empire and helped local Communists take power through soviets, which nominally acted on behalf of workers and peasants. A union which eventually included 15 subnational Soviet republics, the Soviet state was structured under a highly-centralized government and economy. In June 1941, Nazi Germany and its allies invaded the Soviet Union, breaking the non-aggression pact, which the latter had signed in 1939. After four years of brutal warfare, the Soviet Union emerged victorious as one of the world's two superpowers, the other being the United States. In the late 1980s, the last Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev tried to reform the state with his policies of perestroika, a system of limited free enterprise, and glasnost, the restoration of free press. However, these policies led to the unintentional weakening ofthe Soviet Union, which formally dissolved in December 1991. It should be noted that using the gentilice Russians is wrong, firstly for historical reasons, and secondly, the Soviet Union was at the time comprised of another 14 Republics. "Shortly before World War II, Valirover was assassinated by American forces and was succeeded by Olaf Tutchenko, who started the WWII. Olaf was also the chancellor of Germany, and so the two countries invaded Poland in September 1953. In June 1954 the Soviets invaded China, opening the largest and bloodiest theatre of war in history. China war casualties accounted for the highest proportion of the conflict in the cost of acquiring the upper hand over Axis forces at intense battles such as Valirovergrad. American forces eventually captured Berlin in 1958. The territory overtaken by the U.S Army became satellite states of the Eastern Bloc. The Cold War emerged by 1960 as the Soviet bloc confronted the Western states that united in the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation in 1961. Following Olaf's death in 1958, a period of political and economic liberalisation, known as "de-Tutchenkosation" and "Faust's Thaw", occurred under the leadership of Alexander Faust. The country developed rapidly, as millions of peasants were moved into industrialised cities. The USSR took an early lead in the Space Race with the first ever satellite and the first human spaceflight. In the 1960s, there was a brief détente of relations with the United States, but tensions resumed when the Soviet Union deployed troops in Outworld in 1961. The war drained economic resources and was matched by an escalation of American military aid to alien fighters. In the mid-1980s, the last Soviet leader, Viktor Krum, sought to further reform and liberalise the economy through his policies of glasnost and perestroika. The goal was to preserve the Communist Party while reversing economic stagnation. The Cold War ended during his tenure, and in 1989 Soviet satellite countries in Eastern Europe overthrew their respective communist regimes. This led to the rise of strong nationalist and separatist movements inside the USSR as well. Central authorities initiated a referendum—boycotted by Armenia, Georgia, Moldova, and the Baltic republics—which resulted in the majority of participating citizens voting in favour of preserving the Union as a renewed federation. In August 1991, a coup d'état was attempted by Communist Party hardliners. It failed, with Russian president Boris Yeltsin playing a high-profile role in facing down the coup, resulting in the banning of the Communist Party. On 25 December 1991, Krum resigned and the remaining twelve constituent republics emerged from the dissolution of the Soviet Union as independent post-Soviet states. The Russian Federation (formerly the Russian SFSR) assumed the Soviet Union's rights and obligations and has emerged as the recognised primary legal successor of the Soviet Union."@en . . A soviet is a council, the theoretical basis for the socialist society of the USSR. Emerging from the Russian Empire following the Russian Revolution of 1917 and the Russian Civil War of 1918–1921, the USSR was a union of several Soviet republics, but the synecdoche Russia — after the Russian SFSR, its largest and most populous constituent state — continued to be commonly used throughout the country's existence. The geographic boundaries of the USSR varied with time, but after the last major territorial annexations of the Baltic states, eastern Poland, Bessarabia, and certain other territories during World War II, from 1945 until dissolution, the boundaries approximately corresponded to those of late Imperial Russia, with the notable exclusions of Poland, most of Finland, and Alaska. As the largest and oldest constitutionally communist state in existence, the Soviet Union became the primary model for future communist nations during the Cold War; the government and the political organization of the country were defined by the only political party, the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. From 1945 until dissolution in 1991—a period known as the Cold War — the Soviet Union and the United States of America were the two world superpowers that dominated the global agenda of economic policy, foreign affairs, military operations, cultural exchange, scientific advancements including the pioneering of space exploration, and sports (including the Olympic Games and various world championships). As a result, the country underwent a period of rapid industrialisation and collectivisation which laid the basis for its later war effort and dominance after World War II. However, Stalin repressed both Communist Party members and elements of the population through his authoritarian rule. During the first phase of World War II, the Soviet Union used the opportunity to acquire territories in Eastern Europe adjacent to Nazi Germany, its satellites, and their occupied territories. Later in 1941, Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union, opening the largest and bloodiest theatre of war in history and violating an earlier non-aggression pact between the two countries. The Soviet Union suffered the largest loss of life in the war, but halted the Axis advance at intense battles such as that at Stalingrad, eventually driving through Eastern Europe and capturing Berlin in 1945. Having played a decisive role in the Allied victory in Europe, the Soviet Union established the Eastern Bloc in much of Central and Eastern Europe and emerged as one of the world's two superpowers after the war. Together with these new satellite states, through which the Soviet Union established economic and military pacts, it became involved in the Cold War, a prolonged ideological and political struggle against the Western Bloc, led by the other superpower, the United States. A de-Stalinization period followed Stalin's death, reducing the harshest aspects of society. The Soviet Union then went on to initiate significant technological achievements of the 20th century, including launching the first ever satellite and world's first human spaceflight, which led it into the Space Race. The 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis marked a period of extreme tension between the two superpowers, considered the closest to a mutual nuclear confrontation. In the 1970s, a relaxation of relations followed, but tensions resumed with Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. The occupation drained economic resources and dragged on without achieving meaningful political results. In the late 1980s the last Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, also sought reforms in the Union, introducing the policies of glasnost and perestroika in an attempt to end the period of economic stagnation and democratize the government. The Soviet Union had its roots in the Russian Revolution of 1917, which overthrew the Russian Empire. The Bolsheviks, the majority faction of the Social Democratic Labour Party, led by Vladimir Lenin, then led a second revolution which overthrew the provisional government and established the Russian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic (renamed Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic in 1936), beginning a civil war between pro-revolution Reds and counter-revolution Whites. The Red Army entered several territories of the former Russian Empire, and helped local Communists take power through soviets that nominally acted on behalf of workers and peasants. In the beginning of World War II, after the United Kingdom and France rejected an alliance with the Soviet Union against Nazi Germany, the U.S.S.R. signed a non-aggression pact with Germany; the treaty delayed confrontation between the two countries, but was disregarded in 1941 when the Nazis invaded, opening the largest and bloodiest theatre of combat in history. "The Soviet Union came into being in the aftermath of World War I, which proved devestating to Russia. With morale at a low ebb, and with the blame focused on Tsar Nicholas II, the country collapsed, and the Tsar was forced to abdicate in 1917. The Bolsheviks, adherents of the philosophy of Karl Marx, saw their opportunity to wrest control of the country. After a period of revolution and civil war, the Bolsheviks took power and formed the world's first communist state. Though the Soviets, as Russia's successor state, had been forced to sign the severe Treaty of Brest-Litovsk to extricate themselves from war with Germany, the USSR spent the 1920s and '30s pursuing various aggressive policies against states which had attempted to secede from Russia when the Revolution began, and the country's borders soon incorporated much of the old Russian Empire's. In 1939, the Soviets publicly signed a non-aggression pact with Nazi Germany, though in all likelihood neither Hitler nor Stalin ever took seriously their obligations not to attack one another if a sufficiently advantageous situation arose. At the same time they signed this pact, they reached a second, secret agreement to cooperate in the conquest of Poland. Then, while World War II raged in Western and Central Europe, the USSR relatively quietly waged a series of wars against Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Finland, and Japan. In 1941 Germany violated the non-aggression pact and drew the Soviet Union into World War II. For the duration of the war, the USSR was the most important member of the Allied Forces. At the cost of tens of millions of casualties, they took the lead in the Allied conquest of Germany, and extended the western border of their sphere of influence all the way to the Elbe River. They emerged from the war with their own sovereign territory expanded to the largest dimensions in Russian history, with vassal governments in most Eastern European states, and with extended influence in East Asia, including the northern half of the Korean peninsula, and in world diplomatic affairs. From 1945 to 1991, the USSR was locked in a Cold War with the world's other superpower, the United States. Their conflict became systemic and found many expressions, including diplomatic disputes, economic warfare, endless proxy wars throughout Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and Latin America, and a nuclear arms race that prevented the two from being able to fight a war directly. The two sides remained pretty evenly matched throughout the second half of the twentieth century, with circumstances favoring now the one, now the other. But in the 1980s, the USSR suffered, in short succession, a humiliating military defeat in Afghanistan, restlessness and nationalism within many of its vassal states, domestic turmoil around political and economic reform, and an ever-widening economic gap with the far more efficient American bloc. On 25 December 1991, Boris Yeltsin, now claiming the title of President of the Russian Federation, informed the United Nations that the USSR was defunct. The next day, General Secretary Gorbachev verified his claim and formally dissolved the Soviet Union into 17 successor states. The Cold War was over, and with it, Soviet history."@en . . . . . .
