The company had success with both arcades and home consoles, but on January 24, 2001, formally left the consumer console business and began concentrating on software development for multiple third-party platforms. Sega's main offices, as well as the main offices of its domestic division, Sega Corporation (Japan), are located in Ōta, Tokyo, Japan. Sega's European division, Sega Europe Ltd., is headquartered in the Brentford area of London. Sega's North American division, Sega of America Inc., is headquartered in San Francisco, California; having moved there from Redwood City, California in 1999. Sega Australia's headquarters are located in Sydney, New South Wales. The company also has offices in France, Germany and Italy. Until 2000, Sega's official corporate name was Sega Enterprises Ltd. The management of Sega is something to be marveled at. It was based upon the premise that there is an inherent need to proliferate video gaming materials that were not made by the big red devil himself. Sega took the idea that it was their duty to do what the opposite of the devil would. While manufacturing arcade units and having some success in Japan, they attempted to penetrate the American market like a classic mighty dump truck with the Sega Master System. The Master System was designed to compete with the devil's dusty flashing gaming box and it failed miserably. However, Sega saw a flaw in the devil's ways. He was an ancient devil that hated upgrading, forcing the same old dusty corroding box on the masses who would never know better. Sega decided that they saw a bright, fresh, opportunity to forge a new beginning for the video game industry with them on top. Appropriately, they named the console the Mega Drive. Nonetheless, the US patent office attempted to thwart Sega yet again by saying that the name Mega Drive is already taken. So, randomly, they renamed the console the Genesis. Among the game consoles manufactured by Sega is the extremely popular Sega Genesis, and the Sega Saturn, both made to compete with the Nintendo Entertainment System (Nintendo Famicon in Japan) and the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (Super Nintendo Famicon in Japan) respectively. Two extensions for the Genesis was made, the Sega CD and the Sega 32X. Their business continued as they produced arcades. Eventually, they got into the console business with the SG-1000 and the SEGA Master System. However, SEGA really started competing with Nintendo with the SEGA Genesis. They mounted an anti-Nintendo marketing campaign with the slogan "Genesis does what Nintendon't." They also advertised their Blast Processing. However, their next system, the Saturn didn't sell as well. After the Dreamcast failed to sell well enough, they decided to leave the console business and focus on game development. SEGA now publishes games on the Wii, Xbox 360, and the Playstation 3, as well as the Nintendo DS. SEGA is also publishing Genesis games on the Virtual Console. Sega is best known for creating video games such as Sonic The Hedgehog. Sega produced only one Star Trek-related arcade game, the Star Trek: Strategic Operations Simulator video game. They also marketed a version of the game for several home game and computer systems. A Sega game for the Atari 2600 based on Star Trek III: The Search for Spock was under production, but was canceled and never realized. In addition, Sega produced several home systems of their own. Of these, only the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, Game Gear and 32X had Star Trek-related games produced for them. A port of Star Trek: New Worlds was announced for the Dreamcast but it was cancelled and never released. From 1993 to 1994 they also maintained a video game content rating system known as the Videogame Rating Council which rated games released on Sega platforms in North America before it was phased out in favor of the Entertainment Software Rating Board system. SEGA versuchte die Ende 1998 mit dem Sega Dreamcast, der nach wie vor eine große Fangemeinde hat, zu ändern. Missmanagement (zu wenig/falsche Werbung) jedoch ließ den Dreamcast als eine "arme" Konsole erscheinen. Sony vermarktete seine Playstation 2 als "Wunderkiste" mit DVD-Laufwerk, hervorragender Grafik etc. SEGA jedoch vermarktete nicht die Vorzüge seiner Konsole: Online-Fahigkeit, viele Exklusiv-Titel (Shenmue, Sonic Adventure, Jet Set Radio, Soul Calibur, etc.) weshalb die Konsole keinen Anklang bei einem breiteren Publikum fand. Vom Scheitern des Dreamcast kann man jedoch nicht reden. Mit dem Dreamcast wurden in 2 Jahren soviele Einheiten verkauft wie mit dem Saturn in 6!
