Lange was born on March 1, 1950, in New York City, New York, and attended Mamaroneck High School in his youth. He studied Theatre with a concentration on Directing at The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He then spent eight years in the advertising business, producing TV and radio commercials, and then decided to become a mainstream Hollywood director. Lange has since directed over 240 episodes, one feature-film, and two made-for-TV movies during the course of career. Lange's feature-film, Intern, was entered in the Sundance Film Festival in 2000, and it became a peak experience for him and his career. In addition to directing, Lange writes and produces parody CDs with a Jewish theme.
