Tolkien's legendarium. He is the primary protagonist of Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Frodo was a hobbit of the Shire who inherited Sauron's Ring from Bilbo Baggins and undertook the quest to destroy it in the fires of Mount Doom with the assistance of the Fellowship of the Ring. In the acclaimed film trilogy based on the books done by Sir Peter Jackson, Frodo was portrayed by Elijah Wood. When Frodo was 33 years old (or, his coming-of-age), his cousin Bilbo Baggins celebrated his 111th birthday party in a rather spectacular manner: by throwing an enormous party and then vanishing to retire and leaving all of Bag End to Frodo. Part of Frodo's inheritance was Bilbo Baggins's magic ring. This ring was the One Ring of Power, and at the urging of the wizard Gandalf, Frodo sets out on a journey with his friend Samwise Gamgee (and later Peregrin Took and Meriadoc Brandybuck... and STILL later the entire Fellowship of the Ring) to throw this Ring of Power into Mount Doom. Frodo Baggins was a hobbit, born and raised in the Shire. He was the nephew of the famed Bilbo Baggins, and they shared the same birthday. Upon Bilbo's 111st birthday, Bilbo gave the One Ring, which he found sixty years prior, to Frodo before departing for Imladris to live with the elves. Frodo had the ring for seventeen years before Gandalf convinced him to take the Ring to Mordor, where it was to be destroyed. The hobbit, along with Sam, Merry, Pippin, and Aragorn, who they met in Bree, traveled to Imladris themselves after Frodo and company were attacked on Weathertop. There, the Fellowship of the Ring was formed. They fought at Moria and Amon Hen, losing Gandalf and Boromir to foes, when the Fellowship disbanded. The character of Frodo Baggins appears in all the Lord of the Rings games, but is only a playable character in Lord of the Rings : The Fellowship of the Ring and The Lord of the Rings : The Return of the King. In the other games such as Lord of the Rings : The Two Towers, Lord of the Rings : The Third Age, and Lord of the Rings : Conquest, Frodo Baggins appears in video cut scenes, as a an unplayable game character or is just mentioned in the game. In the Lord of the Rings : The Fellowship of the Ring, Frodo is a playable character throughout the game in settings such as the Shire, the Old Forest, the Barrow Downs, The Mines of Moria, and Amon Hen. As a character Frodo is able to wield a stick and eventually a sword, Sting, with which he can attack enemies. He also has the Ring which can be used in the game to disappear for a time, but which has a time limit and can result in the failure of the mission if the Ring is worn for longer than the allotted time. Frodo can be used to fight, travel throughout Middle Earth, and communicate with other characters in the game. In Lord of the Rings : The Return of the King Frodo is playable along the Hobbits' Path and can be used to complete the very last mission, Mt Doom. In this game Frodo can be upgraded with new moves, skills, and stronger weapons. Upon completion of the game, Frodo (and any other character) can be used in any level. by Byron Injeeli Frodo Baggins was a hobbit, born and raised in the Shire. He was the nephew of the famed Bilbo Baggins, and they shared the same birthday. Upon Bilbo's 111st birthday, Bilbo gave the One Ring, which he found sixty years prior, to Frodo before departing for Imladris to live with the elves. There, the Fellowship of the Ring was formed. They fought at Moria and Amon Hen, losing Gandalf and Boromir to foes, when the Fellowship disbanded. Frodo and Same then journeyed alone to Mordor, where Frodo after many weeks cast the Ring, along with his unwilling guide, Gollum, into the fires of Mount Doom, ending the rule of Sauron and the War of the Ring. The nephew of Bilbo Baggins, and like him, hailing from Bag End in the Shire's Westfarthing, Frodo Baggins was the premier hero of the War of the Ring, even while yet in the company of many other great and dedicated heroes. Frodo was born in T.A. 2968 to Drogo Baggins, the great-grandson of Balbo Baggins, and Drogo's bride Primula, the youngest daughter of Gorbadoc "Broadbelt" Brandybuck of Brandy Hall. At the tender age of twelve, Frodo lost both his parents in a boating accident. When twenty-one, Frodo was adopted by Bilbo, who was in his ninety-ninth year, and being unmarried, still had no heir to his considerable estate. (For the sake of convenience, Bilbo was referred to as Frodo's uncle. In actuality, Primula Took was Bilbo's first cousin and Drogo was his second cousin; Bilbo was therefore Frodo's first and second cousin, once removed either way.) On Frodo's thirty-third birthday, and Bilbo's eleventy-first, Bilbo left the Shire for Rivendell, bequeathing all the estate to Frodo, including his magical items and Sauron's One Ring of Power. Frodo shared Bilbo's Fallohide blood and was considered by his peers to be the inheritor of the "Mad Baggins" in all respects, for he was somewhat moody, took long walks, and was suspected of entertaining dialogues with Elves. At Gandalf's urging, in TA 3018, Frodo assumed the name of Mr. Underhill and went to Rivendell to escape the Nazgûl. On that journey he encountered Aragorn, whom he knew then as Strider, and was nearly slain by the Lord of the Nazgul. At Rivendell, Frodo volunteered to serve as the Ringbearer. After accomplishing the arduous and dangerous journey with the help of Samwise Gamgee, and standing on the very brink of Mount Doom, Frodo finally succumbed to the seduction of the One Ring and claimed it for himself. At that moment, Gollum, who was still alive only because of Frodo's invincible sense of mercy, bit off Frodo's ring finger and seized the Prize, but toppled with it to their mutual destruction in the belly of the volcano. And so the quest was completed. Frodo's journey to Mount Doom to destroy the One Ring was successful, and Sauron and all his works were undone. Frodo returned from the task less than a year after his departure. Few of the Hobbits back in the Shire ever learned of Frodo's labors on their behalf. Their gratitude was mainly directed to Meriadoc, Peregrin, and Samwise, who helped evict Wormtongue and the other evil minions of Saruman during the Scouring of the Shire. Frodo then served for just a little while as the Mayor of Michel Delving, but could not endure the work of reconstruction. During these days he was much more moody than Hobbits normally are, yet still extremely perceptive regarding other persons, and continued to eagerly seek out news of the distant lands. So, he spent a little more than a year's time in scholarly work: completing Bilbo's volumes, a few songs, and composing his own part of the Tale of the Ring, which he entitled, 'The Downfall of the Lord of the Rings and the Return of the King' (as seen by the Little People; being the memoirs of Bilbo and Frodo of the Shire, supplemented by the accounts of their friends and the learning of the Wise). Frodo was surpassed in his scholarly and linguistic skills only by Bilbo himself. Frodo passed over the sea in his fifty-second year, claiming his reward for having served as Ring-bearer. He was still unrecoverably haggard in mind and spirit from the time he spent with the Ring, his wounding by the Witch Lord, and the poison of Shelob. He could not remain in the Shire, but was driven to seek the healing of the Green Land Beyond. So he left those words, along with all his possessions, to Samwise, "I tried to save the Shire, and it has been saved, but not for me. It must often be so... when things are in danger; some one has to give them up, lose them, so that others may keep them" (LotR HI 382). Frodo left behind a legacy of such dedication, selflessness, mercy, and strength that none may hope to match it. He, in a sense, lost himself in completing his quest, and the world could no longer hold or heal him. Frodo Baggins is a fictional character in J. R. R. In book canon, Frodo Baggins is a hobbit. This means he is very short, hairy-footed, and somewhat pudgy. His attitude is unsure at times, but very brave and good of heart. At the battle of Weathertop, Frodo is stabbed in the shoulder by a Morgul Blade and thereafter bears its cold, biting scar. After the end of his journey, he finishes his cousin's book There and Back Again... but leaves the ending for Sam Gamgee when he sails for Valinor. He is described as never being quite right after his adventure. In 2010, when asked if he thought Fredo (from The Godfather) was a pimp, Maurice Moss replied "No, he took the ring to Mordor", confusing him with Frodo Baggins.
