Alex Kidd was the protagonist of several video games over the years, spanning various platforms, and appeared in the arcade and on the Sega Master System and the Mega Drive/Genesis home consoles. Alex Kidd's popularity was at a peak with the release of the first game in the series, Alex Kidd in Miracle World, in 1986, which was later built into the Master System console without need of a cartridge and was playable from purchase of the console. In the mid-to-late 1980s, Alex Kidd overtook the character of "Opa-Opa" from the game Fantasy Zone as the official mascot for the Sega Corporation. However, in order to provide Sega with a mascot to rival Nintendo's flagship character Mario (a task which Alex Kidd was not considered up to), in 1991 Sega introduced Sonic the Hedgehog, who did indeed become more popular and recognizable than Alex Kidd, and Sonic subsequently replaced Alex Kidd as Sega's mascot. After this, the popularity of the character waned somewhat, although the character has made numerous cameo appearances in later video games, most recently in Sega Superstars Tennis, Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing and Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. Alex Kidd, a video game character, is a monkey-like boy with big ears in a red jumpsuit and was commonly regarded as Sega's mascot until Sonic the Hedgehog debuted in 1991. His favorite food is most likely onigiri. His games spanned various platforms, and appeared in the arcade and on the Sega Master System and the Mega Drive/Genesis home consoles. Alex Kidd (アレックスキッド Arekkusu Kiddo?) is a video game series from Sega whose popularity peaked during the late 1980s, being at its peak with the release of the first game, Alex Kidd in Miracle World. For a time the titular protagonist was considered Sega's mascot until the creation of Sonic the Hedgehog in 1991, who become more popular and recognizable than Alex Kidd, subsequently replacing him as Sega's mascot. Alex Kidd's first appearance was as an extra on Star Factor 9, a reality television series designed to give the universe's contestants their "15 nanoseconds of fame". Kidd appeared onstage alongside a pair of jugglers and a breakdancer, attempted to wow the judges with his solo demonstration of Janken (essentially rock-paper-scissors). The judges failed to appreciate his act (along with the others with him), with Space Cowell stating his show to be "pathetic" and Diva D believing him to be "not dope". After Ulala revealed the evil plan of Nas T. Beats, Kidd became smitten with the reporter whilst getting an autograph from her. Alex Kidd is a series of video games created by SEGA and one of the franchises that was included in Worlds Unite. It is somewhat well known for being SEGA's flagship series prior to the Video Games that starred Sonic the Hedgehog, who replaced series protagonist Alex Kidd as SEGA's mascot. Alex Kidd was Sega's previous mascot until the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis reached fame and Sonic the Hedgehog replaced him. Alex Kidd's most prominent features are his large pointed ears, red jumpsuit and enormous sideburns. Hailing from the Planet Aries, he is trained in the martial art of Shellcore, which enables one to alter the size and toughness of their hands through sheer willpower, and break objects as strong as solid rock with their fists alone. Whilst he initially lived alone as an orphan on Mount Eternal, he learns from a dying man that he is in fact a lost member of the Radaxian Royal Family, son of King Sander Radaxian and brother of Prince Igul, the latter of whom had been kidnapped along with his fiancé, Princess Lora, by a usurper known as Janken the Great. As a result, Alex Kidd set out on a journey to restore the kingdom, discover the whereabouts of his father, rescue his brother, and put an end to Janken's uprising. After he succeeds, Prince Igul is crowned King of Radaxian, and Alex Kidd, with his martial arts, is granted the position of Defender of the City. However, he eventually sets out on another journey later on to search for his missing father. During the Great Video Game Depression of the 1980's, Sega created its first mascot, known at the time as “Teddy Boy”.
