El inesperado éxito de la cinta la convirtió en una celebridad lo cual trajo problemas como una creciente adicción a las drogas. Fisher actuó también en el películas para televisión así como el especial navideño de Star Wars, y regresó al cine con el film The Blues Brothers. En los 80s repitió su rol de Princesa Leia en El Imperio Contraataca y El Retorno del Jedi, entre otros filmes. En 1987 publicó su libro semi-autobiográfico Postcards from the Edge, el cual fue hecho película en 1990. La trama gira alrededor de una actriz que debe luchar contra sus problemas de adicción a fin de recuperar su carrera. Fisher continuó su carrera actoral actuando y escribiendo a lo largo de los años.
