  • It began around the time that our rich girlfriend left us in 1929 for an African-American boyfriend, a date known as Black Tuesday. That bitch. We then ended up down in the dumps, playing lots of Coldplay. Our house got really filthy and dusty, becoming a dustbowl. Because of this we had to do a whole lot of vacuuming. This was known as the Hoover Era. It got our minds off that whore. Then things got even worse when our rabbit, Snuggles died. Oh god, now I'm getting depressed again just thinking about it. Nowadays it is considered to have been a relatively insignificant period of American history because it was quickly cured with Prozac.

  • The Great Depression was an economic downturn that lasted from October, 1929, well into the late 1930's. It had a great effect on hockey. The National Hockey League had 10 teams in 1926-27. By 1938-39 it was down to 7. The Pittsburgh Pirates, Philadelphia Quakers, Ottawa Senators, Montreal Maroons, and St. Louis Eagles were all victims of the depression. Also victims were possible expansion teams. There were only two hockey teams that could afford to travel from Europe to the 1932 Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. Both teams (Germany and Poland) were heavily subsidized by the United States.
  • The present Economic crisis started in a similar way. People in many parts of the Developed world bought too much on credit till confidence collapsed. Hopefully economists understand more today and the crisis won't become so extreme. We don't know yet.
  • The Great Depression was a period in the early 20th century on Earth in which the entire world experienced an economic downturn. It was focused mainly in North America - specifically the United States and Europe, but it affected the entire world. The downturn also brought about severe social upheaveal, with large numbers of people being unemployed, and a large number of homeless people as well. The African-American population of Harlem was badly affected by the Depression. (DS9 novelization: Far Beyond the Stars)

The Depression began in the late 1920s, most have identified the stock market crash of 1929 as the beginning of the Depression, and it lasted throughout the 1930s. Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected in 1932 on a promise to introduce reforms to help get the U.S. through the Depression. A number of public works projects were started to help get the population to work. One of these projects that still existed in the 23rd century was the Mount Rushmore National Memorial. For over a decade, Roosevelt led the United States through the Depression and the Second World War that followed it until his death in 1945. The African-American population of Harlem was badly affected by the Depression. (DS9 novelization: Far Beyond the Stars) In the 23rd century, Doctor McCoy suffered an accidental overdose of cordrazine. He escaped from the USS Enterprise to the planet Gateway. After following him down, a landing party led by Captain James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock encountered the Guardian of Forever. McCoy jumped through the Guardian, winding up in New York City in January 1930. While in the 20th century, McCoy managed to change human history, resulting in the Federation never coming into existence. Kirk and Spock followed McCoy back. They rescued McCoy and restored the timeline. (TOS episode: "The City on the Edge of Forever"; miniseries: Crucible)

It was the longest, most widespread, and deepest depression of the 20th century, and is used in the 21st century as an example of how far the world's economy can decline. The depression originated in the United States, starting with the stock market crash of October 29, 1929 (known as Black Tuesday), but quickly spread to almost every country in the world. The Great Depression had effects in virtually every country, rich and poor, although the negative impact did vary. The Soviet Union, which had withdrawn from the world economy in the 1920s, was relatively insulated. Germany, which was already hurting from the war reparations imposed upon it after World War I, saw its industrial base heavily impacted. The Depression played a part in the rise of the Nazi Party. The United States and the United Kingdom saw increased government intervention to stabilize their respective economies. Countries started to recover by the mid-1930s, but in many countries the negative effects of the Great Depression lasted until the start of World War II.
  • The Great Depression was a period of economic and social upheaval in the United States of America in the 1930s. Many people became unemployed and homeless; the period was described as quite barbaric by Spock. The misery of the Great Depression was the backdrop for James T. Kirk's visit to 1930. An overdose of cordrazine had rendered Leonard McCoy temporarily insane, and McCoy had fled through the Guardian of Forever – altering the past in a way that eliminated the Federation from the timeline. Pursuing him, Kirk and Spock also journeyed to Earth's past, there encountering social worker Edith Keeler. Through Keeler, they were eventually reunited with McCoy. Kirk also fell in love with the young woman – tragically, since she was fated to die. (TOS: "The City on the Edge of Forever" ) It was implied that something akin to the great depression also happened in the Temporal War timeline, since a Nazi propaganda film promised to rid the United States from "the parasitic elements that have crippled our economy since 1929". A script from Star Trek: First Contact (substantially different from the final movie) mentioned the conditions Picard's crew found on Earth in 2063 as something "that makes the Great Depression look like a minor inconvenience"
