  • By the 2160s, rumors of its existence had reached worlds as far as Vulcan and Earth. (ENT - Rise of the Federation novel: A Choice of Futures) In 2269, the USS Enterprise investigated the Delta Triangle, and discovered a "pocket dimension" called Elysia, in which many missing ships had been trapped. Among the ships trapped was the early warp vessel Bonaventure. A number of species that became trapped within the region -- including Andorians, Tellarites, Klingons, Orions, Vulcans, Romulans, Humans, Phylosians, and Gorn -- joined peacefully to form the Elysian Council. After having engaged in battle, Captain James T. Kirk joined with Klingon Captain Kor of the IKS Klothos to escape this region. (TAS episode: "The Time Trap") In later years, Kor would stress the battle aspect of this encounter. (TLE novel: The Art of the Impossible) Shortly after Enterprise's discovery, the USS Lovell further investigated the Delta Triangle. (SCE eBook: Where Time Stands Still)
  • The Klingons attempted to use the phenomena surrounding the region as a means of springing a mouse trap on the Enterprise, figuring that when the Federation investigated, the loss of the Enterprise would be recorded as just another mysterious starship disappearance. (TAS: "The Time Trap") While the motivation behind the otherwise random Klingon attack on the Enterprise in this region was unclear in the episode, the first draft script (dated 26 August 1973 ) described the region as being a "disputed sector", and that "exclusive exploration rights are still being contested by the Klingons under the Organian Peace Treaty." For this reason, Kor could not accept that that region of space was supposed to be neutral, thus his attack. According to the Star Trek: Star Charts (p. 64) and the Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library ("Federation Historical Highlights, 2161-2385"), the Delta Triangle was located in the Beta Quadrant. The three vertices of this triangle were Kessik, Bellatrix (Gamma Orionis), and FGC-82659. The S.S. Bonaventure was lost in this vortex in 2079.
