As the strike force headed towards the planet, the Jedi realised what they were after and Jedi Master Nin gathered all his fighters together and headed out to intercept the strike force. The Republic fighters left the strike force and moved to block the incoming Jedi and hundreds of fighters clashed in the skies above the planet. Although the Jedi pilots were far superior to anything the Republic could throw at them, the number of Republic ships kept them from reaching the bombers.

abstract
  • As the strike force headed towards the planet, the Jedi realised what they were after and Jedi Master Nin gathered all his fighters together and headed out to intercept the strike force. The Republic fighters left the strike force and moved to block the incoming Jedi and hundreds of fighters clashed in the skies above the planet. Although the Jedi pilots were far superior to anything the Republic could throw at them, the number of Republic ships kept them from reaching the bombers. However after a delay of several minutes Nin and a group of Jedi were able to break free and left the battle in pursuit of the bombers and they were in turn chased by a group of Republic fighters. Several Jedi were shot down, but they continued towards their target and opened fire on the bombers, shooting down many of the rear ones. However, the front bombers dropped their loads, bombarding large areas of the planet's surface, creating massive craters in the surface. The bombers' then broke, fleeing towards space, their mission accomplished. As the Jedi flew over the bomb site, it seemed that little damage had been done and they turned to engage the fighters. From his ship Koon watched the attack end in failure and prepared to order his bombers back on a suicide run. Then suddenly the ground began to give way and a large section of rock caved in, leaving a massive hole in the surface of Ossus. As rock collapsed onto the depot the ammunition dump was hit and the entire depot exploded, causing a massive explosion that could be seen from the Temple. Happy that his strategy had worked, Koon ordered his fighters to withdraw and settled back ready for the siege to end quickly. The Jedi withdrew to their Temple, preparing themselves for the next move.
