Alfred Smith VC (1861 – 6 January 1932) was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Smith was about 24 years old, and a gunner in the Royal Regiment of Artillery, British Army during the Mahdist War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC. In 1895 while working at the Royal Arsenal at Woolwich Smith was involved in an accident when his forearm was crushed by machinery.
