A duty shift was a moment of the workday in starship duty where crewmen were effectively working. The officer in charge of the bridge during a shift was often referred to as the shift officer when the commanding officer was not on the bridge. Three-shift rotations were common in Starfleet, as well as in the Tal Prai'ex. It was common for shift officers, in the Tal Prai'ex, to take command of the ship in battle if they had to fight while on duty.(RIS Bouteina et al.)

  • A duty shift was the portion of the day that various scheduled personnel aboard a starship or space station were on duty. Officers were expected to report on time for their duty shifts and those that failed to do so, without a good excuse, could face penalties such as being placed on report. (TNG: "Hollow Pursuits" ) Seven of Nine once commented that crewmen Boylan and White were frequently late for their duty shifts. (VOY: "Bliss") During her time on the USS Voyager, Ensign Lyndsay Ballard was known for rarely, if ever, showing up for her duty shifts on time. (VOY: "Ashes to Ashes")
  • A duty shift is a period of time in which a sentient individual works or performs duty as part of a group. In Starfleet, the day is divided into several shifts so that key positions of starships and starbases will be manned at all times. The length of the shifts are at the order of the commanding officer and executive officer, usually there are three or four per day. (TNG episode: "Chain of Command, Part I")

On board Voyager, for instance, Neelix once wagered The Doctor three duty shifts in his kitchen for three in sickbay in a shell game. (VOY: "Live Fast and Prosper") Similarly, Odo once assumed a Starfleet security officer's shift aboard Deep Space 9, in order to stand personal watch over First Minister Shakaar Edon and Kira Nerys.
