- Ursprünglich sollte sich das Spiel weit weniger von der Reihe distanzieren als es bereits 2006 vorgestellt wurde, jedoch nahm sich Square Enix Zeit für eine komplette Überarbeitung und änderte den Grafikstil zu einem realistischeren Look sowie auch das Gameplay mit einer teilweise offenen Spielwelt, enormem Aktionsspielraum und eingestreuten Actioneinlagen. Das Spiel erzählt die Geschichte vom Kristallträger Layle, der magische Kräft besitzt und mit seinem Partner Keiss die Geheimnisse um die Kristalle der vier Völkerrassen aufdeckt.

The game was an attempt to make a sandbox game, although some found it just a bunch of stuff to do instead of a true sandbox game.
