During a war meeting when Zuko is thirteen, a man (probably a general) suggests putting a group of inexperienced soldiers on the front lines as a distraction for another attack. Zuko objects to this plan of attack, being the only one to recognize, other than Iroh, the cruelty of the action. His father takes personal offense to this objection and challenges Zuko to an Agni Kai for disrespecting him in his own war chamber. Zuko begs his father's forgiveness, and in reply Ozai burns the left side of Zuko's face.

Zuko begs his father's forgiveness, and in reply Ozai burns the left side of Zuko's face. Because of the cowardice he showed during the Agni Kai, Ozai calls his son a disgrace, and banishes him from the Fire Nation. He sends Zuko on a quest to capture the Avatar, thinking that this is a fruitless task, and that his son will never return (at the time it was thought that Aang died with the rest of the Airbenders, and that the Avatar was never reincarnated into the Water Tribes).
