Detective Benito "Ben" Rojas is an investigator with the Los Angeles Police Department's Hollenbeck Division, and the partner of Oscar Rodriguez. He and his partner investigated the 2005 shooting of Orlando Merced. They assumed it was a random shooting by a local gang, and consequently they skipped a lot of the investigative steps that would normally be taken. They were also hampered by the fact that the bullet was lodged in Merced's spine and could not be removed, eliminating any possible ballistics comparison. They were later approached by Open-Unsolved Unit detectives Harry Bosch and Lucia Soto following Merced's death in 2014.
