  • John Constantine (May 10, 1953 in Liverpool, England) is the fictional protagonist of the comic series Hellblazer and film Constantine. The character is an "occult detective", in the tradition of Jules de Grandin or Carnacki. The character first appeared in the horror comic Swamp Thing #37, written by Alan Moore in which he was a recurring character. He has also made regular appearances in the various incarnations of The Books of Magic, and has made cameo appearances in several DC and Vertigo Comics.

He assists in Dream's pursuit of the bag of magical sand, a pursuit that ends with the death of an old girlfriend, and in return, Morpheus cures him of the nightmares he's been having. He is descended from Lady Johanna Constantine who also had dealings with the Endless.

Raised by an abusive father who blamed him for the death of his mother in childbirth, John grew up highly cynical and cunning, and developed an interest in the dark arts. In his teenage years, he was introduced into the occult world by Anne Marie, learned various spells and became an exorcist with the hopes of one day using his powers to resurrect his mother. John became a figure of respect among the dabblers of magic.
