In 1973, after much research by a team of 12 Welsh miners, IBM released the floppy disk. It was used to distribute software, transfer data between computers, and create small backups. Before hard drives were invented, floppy disks also stored reliable operating systems unreliably. This trend faded with the introduction of Windows and Blue Screens of Death, in which the unreliability is incorporated into the operating system.

  • First introduced in 1971, floppy disks were transportable magnetic computer disks common until the early 21st century. After seeing them in his History of Technology class, James T. Kirk noted that the basic design, a colored protective case surrounding the sensitive storage medium, remained in use long after the disks themselves were phased out. (TOS short story: "A Test of Character")
  • A floppy disk is a data storage medium that is composed of a disk of thin, flexible ("floppy") magnetic storage medium encased in a square or rectangular plastic shell. Floppy disks are read and written by a floppy disk drive or FDD. Invented by IBM, floppy disks in 8-inch (200 mm), 5¼-inch (133⅓ mm), and the newest and most common 3½-inch (90 mm) formats enjoyed many years as a popular and ubiquitous form of data storage and exchange, from the mid-1970s to the late 1990s. However, they have now been largely superseded by flash and optical storage devices while e-mail has become the preferred method of exchanging small to medium size digital files.

  • Floppy disks come in several forms, specified by width: * 3.5 inches; these flop little, having a fairly rigid case. * 5 ¼ inches, encased in flexible plastic, as seen at right. * 8 inches, from the days when dinosaurs roamed the earth.
  • Floppy disks (pl. Floppies) are either 5.25" or 3.5" portable magnetic storage mediums, hidden inside a thin plastic casing. Floppies were first introduced in 1976 by Shugart Associates. In the early days of modern computing, floppy disks were the only way to put programs on a computer. For example, Windows 1.0 was installed using five 360KB 5.25" floppy disks. Although standard 3.5" floppy disks hold 1.44MB (with one IBM-manufactured type capable of 2.88MB), they have been long-superseded by other storage media.

The format technically lives on, as computer software is able to emulate this medium's parameters. PC and Laptop manufacturers have long since stopped including Floppy Disk Drives with their unit, although the drives themselves continue to be available, both in IDE and USB varieties.
