De lijst wordt kortweg Index genoemd. Als men zegt dat een boek op de Index staat, dan wordt daarmee de Index librorum prohibitorum bedoeld. De Index was in de katholieke wereld zeer invloedrijk. Jaren lang was het in katholieke landen zoals België, Polen en Ierland erg moeilijk om exemplaren van boeken te vinden die op de Index stonden.
