Starting 17th in the field of twenty-five, Dixon completed just twenty-three laps before an engine failure dumped him to 22nd. Dixon did not race again for quite a while, but accomplished many things in his final eight race schedule during the 1965 season. After finishing 14th in his season opener at Shelby, Dixon was practically unstoppable. He finished no worse than 8th in his final seven career starts, including career-best 3rd place runs at Asheville and Harris. He also tacked on a fourth place showing at Beltsville (his final career race), a 5th at Islip and Manassas, a 6th place showing at Old Bridge and an 8th at Moyock.
