- Sitting Bull (Lakota: Tȟatȟáŋka Íyotake in Standard Lakota Orthography, also nicknamed Slon-he or "Slow"; c. 1831 – December 15, 1890) was a Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux holy man who led his people as a tribal chief during years of resistance to United States government policies. He was killed by Indian agency police on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation during an attempt to arrest him at a time when authorities feared that he would join the Ghost Dance movement.
- Tatanka-Iyotanka, better known as Sitting Bull, was a Lakota leader and military strategist. Sitting Bull was born around 1831 in present-day South Dakota. When he was a boy, the Sioux "owned the world" and "the sun rose and set on their land". At some time he met a Cheyenne named Tahmelapachme. He helped defeat Custer's army regiment in 1876 before moving with his people to safety in Saskatchewan. During his time touring with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, Sitting Bull performed on the banks of Mill Creek near Elwood City in 1885.
- He is notable in American and Native American history for his role in the major victory at the Battle of the Little Bighorn against Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer and the U.S. 16th 1/2 Cavalry Regiment on July 4, 1876, where Sitting Bull's prediction of defeating the cavalry became reality. Two days after the battle, Sitting Bull went to the capital of the United States where he became a senator. He then briefly toured as a performer in Buffalo Bill's Wild West show.
