The 5.56×45mm NATO (official NATO nomenclature 5.56 NATO) is a rifle cartridge developed in the United States and originally chambered in the M16 rifle. Under STANAG 4172, it is a standard cartridge for NATO forces as well as many non-NATO countries. It is derived from, but not identical to, the .223 Remington cartridge. If the bullet impacts at high enough velocity and yaws in tissue, fragmentation creates a rapid transfer of energy which can result in dramatic wounding effects.

  • The 5.56×45mm NATO is one of the most common rifle cartridges in the world, being the standard cartridge for all NATO countries, and also many non-NATO countries. It was developed for the the first M16-rifles during the Vietnam war. It is lighter than the 7.62×51mm NATO cartridge of the M14. This fact was very noticeable as soldiers could carry twice the amount of ammunition. During the 1970s it was chosen as NATO's standard cartridge. 5.56x45mm cartridges that propel the bullet at higher enough velocity will cause it to fragment inside of the target; lower velocity 5.56x45mm cartridges will caused the round to yaw on impact, with both methods producing lethal wounds greatly disproportionate to the bullet's relatively small size.
  • 5.56×45mm NATO or simply 5.56mm is a rifle cartridge in Counter-Strike Online.
  • The 5.56×45mm NATO (5.56, 5.56x45mm, or 5.56 NATO) cartridge is one of the standardized cartridges for the nations in the NATO organization. It is derived from the .223 Remington cartridge, with which it shares many similarities; the two cartridges are visually identical.
