The Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards in orbit of mars are among Starfleet's most well established Starship construction facilities. These famous shipyards are responsible for building a number of illustrious vessels. It has been recognized since the latter half of the 20th century that the best place to construct starships is the void of space. Free from the burden of gravity, previously unthinkable manufacturing techniques become commonplace. When Starfleet first formed the United Federation of Planets, the design and construction of warp capable spacecraft becomes a priority.

  • The Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards was an important Starfleet starship construction and design facility based at the Utopia Planitia area on Mars in the Sol System. The shipyard spans from land-based portions all the way to geosynchronous orbit above the planet. Many important starships were constructed there, including the USS Enterprise-D, the USS Defiant, and the USS Voyager The yards were made up of a number of separate facilities, including space stations and drydocks. The main complex of the shipyards was Utopia Station One, where a large docking port allowed starships to dock.
  • The Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards, or Utopia Planitia Shipyards, is a key Starfleet vessel construction and design facility in the 24th century. It is partly positioned in synchronous orbit 16,625 kilometers above the Utopia Planitia region on Mars, including the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yard's planetary construction facilities. (TNG: "Parallels", Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual) The USS Voyager also underwent final construction phases at this location. Additionally, while still in drydock, this was the first time Kathryn Janeway visited the ship. (VOY: "Relativity")
  • Then-Commander Benjamin Sisko was assigned to Utopia Planitia sometime after the battle of Wolf 359 for three years, where he assisted in the design work and flight tests of the USS Defiant. (DS9: "Emissary", "The Search, Part I") The USS Voyager also underwent final construction phases at this location. Additionally, while still in drydock, this was the first time Kathryn Janeway visited the ship. (VOY: "Relativity") In an alternate timeline in 2371, the death of Gabriel Bell in 2024 led to the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards temporarily being erased from history. (DS9: "Past Tense, Part I")
  • Many important starships and a number of shuttlecraft classes were constructed there, including the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D), the USS Defiant (NX-74205), and the USS Voyager, as well as the Type-6, Type-7 and Type-9A shuttlecraft. (TNG reference: Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual) It was also the place where the Columbia (NX-02) was tugged by the USS da Vinci after salvage and recovery before being towed to Earth. The yards were destroyed by a Romulan fleet in 2158. (ST reference: Federation: The First 150 Years)
  • The Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards (or Utopia Planitia Shipyards) is a major Starfleet research, development, and construction facility in the 24th century. It is positioned in synchronous orbit of Utopia Planitia on Mars. The facility includes several drydocks and space stations and several large drafting rooms on the planet bound facility. The Galaxy-class Starship Development Project took place mainly in Drafting Room 5 of the ground based building. Kathryn Janeway visited the USS Voyager for the first time while it was still in drydock here.
  • The Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards, or Utopia Planitia Ship Yards, is a key Starfleet starship construction and design facility in at least the 23rd and 24th centuries. It has drydocks and space stations in orbit above the Utopia Planitia region of Mars, as well as ground based facilities in that region of the planet. The term "Mars Spacedock" — used in Star Fleet Data File, vol. 1 — may be an informal term for the orbital components of the Yards. Or perhaps it is a holdover from a term used by the original colonists late in the 21st century or early in the 22nd.

(DS9: "Emissary", "The Search, Part I") The USS Voyager also underwent final construction phases at this location. Additionally, while still in drydock, this was the first time Kathryn Janeway visited the ship. (VOY: "Relativity") In an alternate quantum reality visited by Worf in 2370, the Cardassians were using the Argus Array to spy on several of Starfleet's most important ship yards and design complexes, including the Utopia Planitia surface facilities, along with Starbase 47, Deep Space 5 and the Iadara colony. (TNG: "Parallels" ) In an alternate timeline in 2371, the death of Gabriel Bell in 2024 led to the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards temporarily being erased from history. (DS9: "Past Tense, Part I") The fleet yards in orbit of Mars were sometimes displayed on the large astrometrics monitor aboard the USS Voyager. (VOY: "The Voyager Conspiracy") When it seemed possible Voyager would be returning home in early 2377 with the help of a Barclay hologram, he asked Seven of Nine what she would do when they returned. She said immediately get to work on repairs to Voyager, but Barclay told her there were people at Utopia Planitia to do the repairs - and that she should celebrate. (VOY: "Inside Man")

The yards were made up of a number of separate facilities, including space stations and drydocks. The main complex of the shipyards was Utopia Station One, where a large docking port allowed starships to dock. (TTN novel: Taking Wing) When the USS Defiant was forced to fire its warhead module in defense of Deep Space 9 in 2376 the replacement module was delivered directly from Utopia Planitia. (DS9 novel: Avatar, Book One) Planitia also features facilities for civilians, including teaching facilities for children. Doctor Lamerson taught there in the 2360s. (DS9 novelization: Emissary) In 2409, a fleet of Klingon Defense Force ships ambushed the Fleet Yards after having the access codes to the Sol System defense system stolen from the captain of the USS DeWitt. The yards were heavily damaged, temporarily crippling the fleet. (STO mission: "Second Star to the Right, Straight on 'til Morning")

Beginning in 2358, Captain Jonathan Hofmann served with Starfleet Research and Development at Utopia Planitia. While there, he spearheaded the USS Scandalon and Pendragon-class Development Projects. (Star Trek: Pendragon: "Children of the Burning Heart", "Wings As Eagles", "Restoration") Vice Admiral Theoderich Patterson began a tour of duty as commanding officer of the Fleet Yards here while the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D) was being constructed. (TNG novel: The Sky's the Limit: "Meet with Triumph and Disaster") He would still be in command years later when USS Voyager (NCC-74656) was launched. (VOY: "Relativity") Lieutenant Commander James Tiberius Kirk was stationed at Utopia Planitia between 2364 and 2366. During this time he was part of the investigation into the destruction of the USS Yamato. (TNG: "Contagion"; Epiphany Trek: "Epiphany") Prior to his assignment to Deep Space 9 Benjamin Sisko was stationed at Utopia Planitia, where he assisted in the design work and flight tests of the USS Defiant. (DS9: "Emissary", "The Search, Part I") In 2367, the USS Prospect spent a few months in repair and being upgraded at the Utopia Planitia facility. (Star Trek: The Prospect Chronicles: "The Burnt Child") The USS Prospect-A was launched from Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards in 2371. (Star Trek: The Prospect Chronicles: "Home") Lieutenant Commanders Antonio Fernandes and Ethan Arden were stationed at Utopia Planitia for at least part of the USS Cantabrian's refit between 2369 and 2372. Commander Kwong Ju'an, their supervisor, was also stationed there. (Star Trek: The Cantabrian Expeditions: "Catalyst, Part One") Utopia Planitia was heavily damaged in a Klingon Defense Force raid in 2409 led by Lieutenant Commander Brokosh.
