Een korte wapn heeft zijn voordeel bij gevechten in bebouwde kom, werken in een voertuig, parachutisten enz... . Bekende ontwerpen zijn de FN F2000, de FN P90, de Steyr AUG, de FAMAS, de L85,.... .Een nadeel is de uitwerping van de hulzen die als men van schouder moet wisselen gevaarlijk dicht bij het aangezicht is. Bij sommige wapens kan men het uitwerpvenster van zijde veranderen, doch tijdens tactishe omstandigheden heeft men hier de tijd niet voor. Bij de F2000 hebben ze dit opgelost door de uitwerping langs voren te doen.
