Opowiada o walce z zombie dwojga głównych bohaterów, policjanta Leona S. Kennedyego i Clarie Redfield. Gra kiedyś przyprawiała małe dzieci, które nie rozumiały angielskiego i (nic nadzwyczajnego) japońskiego, o palpitację serca i krzyk w nocy „Mamusiu, zombie mnie gryzie”. To dzięki niesamowitej grafice generowanej przez potężny silnik - Pain(ta) i wibrujący pad, gra w stanie jest każdego przerazić i wsadzić do psychiatryka.

- Akcja części drugiej rozgrywa się kilka miesięcy po wydarzeniach znanych z części pierwszej. Tylko na pewien okres Raccoon City znów stało się spokojnym miastem. Pewnego jednak dnia prawie wszyscy mieszkańcy zaczęli zmieniać się w krwiożercze zombie. Dokładnie w tym samym czasie do Raccoon City przyjeżdża początkujący policjant Leon S. Kennedy, oraz młoda Claire Redfield, która chce odnaleźć w mieście swojego zaginionego brata.

La trama del film Resident Evil: Apocalypse prende ispirazione da molti elementi di questo gioco.

- Resident Evil 2 è il secondo tentativo quasi riuscito della Capcom di creare un horror interattivo su piccolo schermo dopo il successo lassativo del primo capitolo. Il titolo esce nel 1998 e viene subito accolto dalla critica con bordate di applausi a perdi polpastrelli, ma solo dopo 10 minuti di gioco si realizza quanto sia invece caratterizzato da contraddizioni e incongruenze talmente grossolane da costringere successivamente la stessa casa sviluppatrice a produrre bisarche di background aggiuntivo nella speranza di tappare i buchi nella storia.
