Plante came back with full seasons with the Islanders in 1995-96 and 1996-97 and also played for the United States in the 1996 and 1997 World Championships. But in 1997-98 Plante was sent down to the Utah Grizzlies for the majority of the season. He signed as a free agent with the Chicago Wolves of the International Hockey League and won the Turner Cup in 2000. He retired in 2002. In the NHL Plante played in 159 games (all with the Islanders) and scored 9 goals and 14 assists.
