Zu allererst hieß der Titel des Spiels Super Mario 128, was eine technische Demo für die GameCube war. Dieses Spiel wurde dann aber gecancelt, weil Super Mario Galaxy schon im Entwicklungstadium war und Super Mario 128 somit unnötig erschienen wäre. Aus dem geplanten Vorgänger kommt auch die Idee mit den Planeten und einigen anderen Grafik-Spielereien.
