Kuni Okabu was a Kuni Shugenja who took Kuni Tarochi as student. Tarochi was eager to prove his worth, and moved without permission into the shadowlands to kill a minion of Fu Leng on his own. Okabu found Tarochi alive, with the student's upper torso inside the mouth of an ogre converted into jade. The student had cast a jade spell upon the wandering ogre, which harmed the beast, but had not stopped it immediately. When the ogre was trying to eat Tarochi, the spell had begun to take its toll, killing the ogre. Okabu extracted his student from the jade ogre's mouth, tended Tarochi, and carried him back to safety.
