On September 7, 2011, he passed away in the 2011 Lokomotiv Yaroslavl plane crash Liv is an agile goaltender who currently holds the Elitserien's record for the most shutouts in the playoffs, with 6, four of which in the final; he established this mark in merely two seasons. Liv signed a one-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings, the team that had drafted him 102nd overall in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, in 2006. Despite being recalled twice by the Wings, he never saw any National Hockey League action; he played only with the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League and the Toledo Storm of the ECHL. Following that season, Liv inked a three years deal with his old HV 71 club. In 2008, following a very strong year, Liv led HV 71 to the Elitserien's gold medal. His play had been stellar, with a 1.82 GAA and .938 save percentage record; that kind of brilliant play earned him his first Guldpucken award. Stefan Liv died during a plane crash with his team Lokomotiv, from which there were only two survivors.
