  • Black Mushroom is a consumable item in The Elder Scrolls Travels: Shadowkey.
  • The mushroom can be used with a pestle and mortar while having an empty vial in your inventory. This will result in making Black mushroom ink, which can be used to dye several items black; such as desert robes, Silverlight, black balloons (using dye on origami balloons), Goblin mail, and wizard robes. It can be eaten, but it will not heal any life points. The message "Eugh! It tastes horrible, and stains your fingers black." appears when eaten. This does not bear any negative side effects. The reason for this may be to give players a hint at the mushroom's intended purpose as a dye.
  • One way to farm for this is to load a later quest (A Shattered Crown quest) in Act I and take the Cathedral Gardens Waypoint then proceed through Leoric's Passage to Cathedral Level 1. The mushroom is rare and you may need to remake multiple times before finding it. To do this, leave game then click "Resume Game". Enemies should respawn indicating the level has been reset, and you may find the mushroom.

abstract
  • One way to farm for this is to load a later quest (A Shattered Crown quest) in Act I and take the Cathedral Gardens Waypoint then proceed through Leoric's Passage to Cathedral Level 1. The mushroom is rare and you may need to remake multiple times before finding it. To do this, leave game then click "Resume Game". Enemies should respawn indicating the level has been reset, and you may find the mushroom. The item will be in a patch of lightly glowing violet mushrooms, when the mushroom patch is clicked the patch will make a sound like an opening chest. When the node it spawns from is clicked, you hear a male voice utter "woah." After picking it up, the character will state something like "Now those are some big mushrooms" or "These mushrooms are quite enormous." This is an homage to the Black Mushroom quest in the original Diablo.

The reason for this may be to give players a hint at the mushroom's intended purpose as a dye. The name, shape, and properties of this fungus appear to be a reference to real-world ink cap mushrooms (Coprinus sp.) which are fungi that were historically used for ink or dye, hence their name and usage in quests. They also tend to be inedible, though not usually harmful, which is why it heals no life points in game and "tastes horrible".
