Arquebusiers are the standard Gunpowder Infantry of the File:Gunpowder age small.jpg Gunpowder Age. They are the first standard unit of this class, replacing the now-obsolete Light Infantry. Arquebusiers are trained at the Barracks and are effective against all types of Infantry, but very weak against both Light and Heavy Cavalry. Arquebusiers complement the slower moving melee Elite Pikemen, which are much more effective against Cavalry, but lose to Infantry.

Arquebusiers complement the slower moving melee Elite Pikemen, which are much more effective against Cavalry, but lose to Infantry. Note that Arquebusiers and the still-available Crossbowmen of the Medieval Age fulfill a similar role in combat. Aside from the different resources required to train the units, Crossbowmen have a higher rate of fire and deal somewhat more damage over time against Heavy Infantry and Ranged Cavalry, but in turn have less hit points and are more easily killed. Arquebusiers also have damage bonuses against Foot Archers such as Crossbowmen, making them more versatile against different types of Infantry. Crossbowmen eventually upgrade to the next unit in the Gunpowder Infantry class, Musketeers, in the Enlightenment Age.
